After 2020 presidential candidate Sen. Kamala Harris attacked former Vice President Joe Biden during the first Democratic presidential debate for opposing busing in the 1970s, it sparked a larger conversation among candidates about whether the federal government should return to forced busing to integrate America's schools.
I support the busing, Harris, D-Calif., said Sunday to reporters. The schools of America are as segregated or more segregated today than when I was in elementary school. And we need to put every effort, including busing, into play to desegregate the schools.
Harris isn't the only 2020 presidential candidate to weigh in on federal court-ordered busing. Sen Kirsten Gillibrand, D-N.Y., said that she wasn't opposed to federally mandated busing as an option and Sen. Bernie Sanders, D-Vt., said on ABC's "This Week" on Sunday that while busing is an "option," it is better to focus on fair housing legislation.
"Busing is certainly an option that is necessary in certain cases, but it is not the optimal," Sanders said. "Does anybody think it's a good idea to put a kid on a bus, travel an hour to another school, into another neighborhood that he or she doesnt know, that's not the optimal. What is the optimal is to have great community schools which are integrated."
Although Harris was able to undercut Biden at the debate, is stressing mandated busing forward a winning strategy in the Democrats' drive to win back the White House?
According to Larry Sabato, director of the University of Virginia Center for Politics, busing was an enormously unpopular practice that went several steps too far.

Please keep this idea going right into November 2020. Every rational parent who moved to a town for its educational quality will vote Republican. I live in Eastern Pennsylvania and the folks from Bucks County dont want the children being bused to Philadelphia.
Being looney dipsticks could.
“The Democrats are on the precipice of chasing every white suburban mom who helped flip the House blue back to President Trump.”
The Democrats have TWO ISSUES that they always, and mostly wrongly, beat the Republicans on - and that is Education and Health Care.
If they push ahead with Forced Busing, they will simply be handing the Republicans the Education issue.
...of course that presupposes that the Republicans have enough of a brain to actually pick it up and run with it, but then that’s hoping a lot, from that bunch.
The fact ABC asks this question seriously shows they are out of touch with people.
Not if they can get enough illegals to vote
It was all a big setup and Sleepy Joe stumbled right into it.
Kamala, who had been polling at around 5% knew she needed a breakout moment. She decided that the best course of action would be to insinuate that Joe Biden, Barack Obama's Vice president for eight years, was a segregationist. She already had the "I was that little girl" T-shirts printed up.
It worked. "My time is up" Biden's campaign is mortally wounded. He cannot take on President Trump. And Harris is climbing in the polls.
But what will be the cost? Trump will not let this unforced error slide.
They’re out of their friggin minds. Bussing was a hated failure in the 70’s.
Don’t forget gun confiscation.
Winning set of policies if ever there was one. I’m sure that’ll go down real well in swing states.
The only winning item they have is their extreme hatred for Donald Trump. Thanks to the nonstop media propaganda, I think a very strong subset of Americans has bought it and would vote for ANYTHING to get Trump out of office.
I think they KNOW they’re going to lose in 2020.
They are trying to decide which candidates, and which issues they want to lose with.
Some of each are more sacred than others.
The worst that can actually happen for Conservatives may be for Moderates to regain control of the Democrat Party, as odd as that sounds.
Harris and Bident bringing up Busing communicates nothing about busing or any “issue”. It communicates that they are focused on the past and not the future.
Most Americans are focused on the future. They like a JFK or Bill Clinton or Reagan or Trump who is focused on the future. As long as Trump is focused on the future...future relations with foreign friends and enemies.... future taxes and regulations and jobs.... nobody cares about Trump’s past.
Harris and Biden with a focus on the past says to most Americans the big thumb and forefinger on the forehead.
The MSM/Democrats are in a quandary.
Use this save Biden, or go with the racist/fake black woman and go down in flames.
I forgot about that and free college. And a pony.
Hickenlooper and Delaney are the only two Democrats not running to the left of the Khmer Rouge and they're earning zero name recognition. 2020 will not be the year of the moderate Democrat. The message from the base is "Woke Or Broke!"
Is Trump considering a federal busing policy?
A reporter asked Trump about a heated exchange between the Democratic presidential candidates Joe Biden and Kamala Harris at last weeks debate on the topic of school integration: Where do you stand on that issue of federally mandated busing? Trump first graded the debate on style, then added, And as far as that, I will tell you in about four weeks, because were coming out with certain policy thats going to be very interesting and very surprising, I think, to a lot of people.
“Could Democrats’ support for federally mandated busing hurt their chances in 2020?”
Yep. but then again, there’s at least an additional doezen equally insane proposals that each will hurt the Dems equally as much ....
Busing is beyomd stupid.
The original busing made a lot of people mad. Your kid is driven an hour each way to school, so they can’t do extracurriculars.
It is a top down approach that doesn’t necessarily improve the local schools. It takes money away from things that may actually help long term like hire more, quality teachers.
It is rather bigoted, too, to assume white kids civilize a bad school and black kids need “influence” ... that liberals then say it is oppressive to try to change minority cultures undermines every argument FOR busing.
The “white flight” and “upper class flight” from the big cities mean that busing by definition will have to bring people in from the suburbs to the school. You won’t just bus kids across Chicago or Dallas but from one to two hours out just to get enough whites and Asians to be “mixed”.
That alone will hurt kids, because you aren’t driven to a school 20 miles away but 40. No extracurriculars, ever. An hour plus trip by parents if you’re sick to come get you. No support from parents to bring an inhaler or lunch. You’re at the mercy of the violent local kids because no one KNOWS or cares about you. No accountability, because you’re easily shuffled off to another school.
If Democrats do this, expect home schooling and private schools to surge.
“2020 will not be the year of the moderate Democrat.”
That was actually my point. The extreme Left may be being allowed to lead in this lost election. The power behind the Left will “correct” the extremism that has taken hold of their party by smashing it against the rock of Trump.
