House Democrats thought they had an easy issue for rallying the Black vote: Bringing up reparations for slavery as an election issue and holding congressional hearings. What better way to rally coveted Black voters than to hold out a big pile of reparations money along with lot of talk about victimization derived from evils committed in the past?
It didn't work out the way they thought it would.
A large number of Black intellectuals and pundits weighed in, not just at the hearing, but on Twitter and beyond, making a hash of the Democrat "narrative":
Quillette columnist Coleman Hughes, who's a Black Democrat, argued in testimony that the whole thing was insulting to black people and a distraction from the issues Black people face today. That got him booed by Democrats for what's figuratively called 'wandering off the plantation.'
Seems he didn't make either them or their obsession with slavery reparations look good.
His remarks echo those of prominent Black economist Glenn Loury who has has been noting these uncomfortable facts for decades, saying it's a waste of time to put a price on slavery.

Things got even worse for the Democrats when former NFL football star and Fox News contributor Burgess Owens spoke to the committee:
“I do not believe in reparations because what reparation does is it points to a certain race, a certain color and it points to them as evil,” Owens said. He added that reparations also turns black people into “beggars.”
The most shocking moment from Owens’ testimony came when he called out the Democrat Party for their historical ties to racist movements, as well as policies they currently push that hold minorities back.

It’s gonna be loads of fun watching the Democrats when their Hispanic voters realize they’ll be paying these reparations.
There is a valid point that slaves deserved some form of reparations from their owners after slavery was ended. Morally, it’s tough to argue that. But politically, it was simply impossible. And that’s not something that can be fixed today.
Or Asians.
Hispanics and Asians hate blacks and will not vote for it.
Finally, a little thoughtful commentary coming out of a
House hearing. Pleased they spoke up. It doesn’t happen often.
They’ll put a stop to that quick.
Reparations were paid.
They were paid with every drop of Union soldiers’ blood.
They were paid with every limb lost.
They were paid with every eye blinded.
They were paid with every act of inhumane treatment at Andersonville.
They were paid with every life at Gettysburg.
They were paid with every bullet, grapeshot and cannonball.
And Robert E. Lee signed the check, “Paid in full.”.....................
Hahaha aint it grand when the chickens come home to roost!
Asians too. Also, what percentage of Whites owned slaves?
What about Whites that came over after slavery was outlawed?
I’m trying to imagine what 50% of the black population in America will say when told THEY will have to pay reparations to other blacks.
Being that over 50 percent are NOT descendants of slaves, or worse yet - descendants of Africans who captured and sold other Africans to traders.
Barack Obama is a prime example of one who should pay reparations.
The Democrats are like Daffy Duck trying to convince Elmer Fudd that it’s rabbit season . . . Elmer needed “more briefing”. The Rats are going to have to go back and revise more history (more briefing) before they try this stunt again. There are too many people walking around that still know REAL history!!!!
“Exploding cigar”!!!!!! Funny!!
They get free money from Uncle Sam, play PS4 on their big screen tv’s, and buy $300 sneakers. That’s preferable to living in a mud hut and chucking spears in tribal warfare...
P.I.F.
Maybe.
But those former slaves are all dead and any claims they may have had died with them.
I would also say that they were paid with every drop of CSA blood shed. That was not the intention of those whose blood was shed, but it was what it ended up going towards—and it was the intention of many who shed the blood.
Not all of the North wanted to do away with slavery, and not all of the South that wanted freedom from the North was all that attached to slavery, but in the end the South opted to both submit to the Union yoke which meant kissing slavery good by, whether one liked it or not, and write off all of the blood that had been shed for the sake of a freedom which the South had desired.
Yes, there was more to do after 1865, but much was done and it is too late to do anything more for those who were slaves.
Does anyone else see the absurd irony, of wealthy celebrity Danny Glover, urging us to pay reparations for slavery?
Theoretically, all of the multi million dollar black celebrities, athletes, businessmen, etc. would be getting reparations because of the color of their skin. Yet clearly such people were not held back in achievements because of the legacy of slavery.
AND, this episode reminds me of this same Looney Tune short when Bugs dressed up in a duck suit and Daffy runs into the clearing yelling “Shoot the duck! Shoot the duck!” Elmer promptly blasts him.
With this hearing, the Rats pulled a Daffy: “Shoot the Rat! Shoot the Rat!”
Always amazed me how he called out the race pimps years before Sharpton, jackson, et al.
But that's as far as you can go.
Thank God my Grand daddy got on the boat.
