The case for change: Understanding the current state of infrastructure in the United States

In developed economies like the United States, public infrastructure is typically one of the few forms of government spending that gets support across the political landscape. Roads, water treatment systems, and power lines all contribute to a smoothly functioning economy. They can also stimulate economic growth, increase safety, and reduce energy demand.

I continue to think people just don’t like rubbing elbows with the great unwashed, so if they can afford it they drive. And a multicultural selection of regular transit users I’ve talked to here say that rider issues have increased in the last couple years, that the system isn’t policing quality of ride problems.

What I need is cheaper Diesel, more non-alcoholic gas and a better selection of turbo, manual transmission AWD vehicles.

Unless you live in NYC, mass transit is inconvenient. Mass transit is also expensive. NYC subway fares are $2.75 each way. But that only covers 1/3 of the cost of operating the subway. Taxes and tolls on motorists pay for the rest. Elsewhere, mass transit has been subsidized to the tune of 90% of operating and capital costs. It would be cheaper to *give* all the riders a free Vespa style scooter so they can drive themselves wherever they want to go.

"Although demand for transit solutions is increasing nationwide,..."

Sure! "Demand" from consulting firms, government socialists, environmental communists, and, most importantly, criminal enterprises wishing to extend their reach further into America...

You would not want to live in NYC with 8 million people driving Deep as around the city.

I rode the bus for 12 years in Hong Kong. I completely understand why people don’t want to use these systems and HK has one of the best anywhere.

It got to the point where I rode a bicycle rather than take the bus

As someone whose only experience of HK mass transit is as a tourist, and only for a few days, I have to say I am impressed by how efficient it was. I’ve also read that HK mass transit is completely unsubsidized. All mass transit systems should be that way. AFAIK, only Hong Kong’s is.

The buses are not subsidized but price controlled. The trains are owned by the government I think

The system is rather expensive to use

Gravy is right, and we’re served up as the shit on the shingle.

“Roads, water treatment systems, and power lines all contribute to a smoothly functioning economy.”

In my 3rd volume I almost exclusively dial into drinking water. To anyone with an open mind, it is a case study on the decline of American society. Most of us know the condition of our roads. Power lines? That’s a whole other discussion.

There is an ongoing debate about public water vs privatized water. I don’t know for sure what the solution is for our problems, but it is clear to me that bureaucracy either sucks us dry or poisons the water.

Those 2 options alone are untenable...

I’m sure “cash for clunkers” had nothing to do with getting more people on the roads.

For those who use transit in a handful of cities, City Mapper is an outstanding free app. I’ve put in on my watch so I always know when the next ferry is leaving.

New York is way ahead of this - they are going to give out free driver’s licenses to the public transit constituency. Soon to be followed by free cars, I expect.

Public transit is required in certain locations, like Manhattan. Or Downtown Pittsburgh, where geography has put parking space at an extreme premium.
