[I continue to think people just don’t like rubbing elbows with the great unwashed, so if they can afford it they drive. And a multicultural selection of regular transit users I’ve talked to here say that rider issues have increased in the last couple years, that the system isn’t policing quality of ride problems.]


Unless you live in NYC, mass transit is inconvenient. Mass transit is also expensive. NYC subway fares are $2.75 each way. But that only covers 1/3 of the cost of operating the subway. Taxes and tolls on motorists pay for the rest. Elsewhere, mass transit has been subsidized to the tune of 90% of operating and capital costs. It would be cheaper to *give* all the riders a free Vespa style scooter so they can drive themselves wherever they want to go.

You would not want to live in NYC with 8 million people driving Deep as around the city.

I rode the bus for 12 years in Hong Kong. I completely understand why people don’t want to use these systems and HK has one of the best anywhere.

It got to the point where I rode a bicycle rather than take the bus
