Americans in 1913 showed by their votes they had forgotten the purpose of the Framers’ design for the Senate. We today, by and large, have even forgotten that generation’s forgetting.

We have forgotten so much of what Americans once knew about America. To choose just one example—a simple but telling one—there is the name of the city of Cincinnati.

For decades, I have been conducting a kind of unscientific poll. Whenever I meet someone from Cincinnati, I always say, “Cincinnati. What an interesting name that is. Do you know where it came from?” The question generally elicits a blank look. So far, no one I have asked has been able to provide the answer. (I am certain many people from Cincinnati do know the answer, but evidently many don’t.)

Please don’t get me wrong. I don’t mean to pick on the fine citizens of this great city; many of us who are not from Cincinnati can’t answer the question either.

This would have astonished Americans of the Founders’ generation and many later generations of Americans. Once upon a time, every American knew quite a bit about the men known as the Cincinnati—and about the man they were named for. That man was George Washington.

Washington was celebrated as “Cincinnatus.” He earned that name by being an astonishing example of republican virtue.

Meet the Original Cincinnatus Washington led America to victory in the American Revolution, but he did not then seize political power, as many in Europe assumed he would and as his contemporary Napoleon did after the French Revolution. Well, for more historical revision, a lot of universities are denigrating the “Cincinnatus” epithet by pointing out that the original Lucius Quinticus Cincinnatus was a Roman dictator, dictators being one of the aberrations of the Roman Republic (comparable to our unappointed “czars” and other executive-branch bureaucrats)—but they leave out his immediate surrender of that nigh-absolute power twice, after the Aequi invasion and Maelius’ attempted coup respectively.

I thought cinncinnatus was a statesman in ancient Rome. I never heard George Washington referred to as Cincinnatus.

A bit off topic, but how many of us know how our hometowns got their names? Where did Chicago come from? Why is Buffalo called Buffalo? That itself would be an interesting historic subject for all of us.

That goes back to Wilson too, who regarded socialism and democracy as “one and the same” and pushed through the Sixteenth and Seventeenth Amendments to erode the republican quality of the Constitution and make it more “democratic” in nature.

It is so important that our young learn to love American heroes as early as possible. We took our son to DC and checked out Mount Vernon in May.
Then for summer reading together I located Washington: The Indispensible Man (short chapters) for a 15 minute read every day. No computer till history reading is completed.

Yes, I know the origin of the name of the city. But then, I’m an Ohioan by birth and grew up at a time when the state had one of the best public school systems in the US. We were required to learn national, state, and local history. Ask the simple questions of younger generations now whether they knew the original colonies were founded primarily by northern European Christian fundamentalists escaping religious persecution, and that their descendants wrote the foundational documents for our new nation that were intentionally based on uniquely Judeo-Christian concepts of human rights and dignity, and all you’ll get are unbelieving or blank looks. The truth of our history is no longer taught in our schools, despite the wonderful and unique result it produced. That would offend a large percentage of our population now. And so they are destined to lose a quality of life that has been unique in all of human history. It’s already happening.
