What is going on with the unending Brexit drama, the aftershocks of Donald Trump's election and the "yellow vests" protests in France? What drives the growing estrangement of southern and eastern Europe from the European Union establishment? What fuels the anti-EU themes of recent European elections and the stunning recent Australian re-election of conservatives?
Put simply, the middle classes are revolting against Western managerial elites. The latter group includes professional politicians, entrenched bureaucrats, condescending academics, corporate phonies and propagandistic journalists.
What are the popular gripes against them?
One, illegal immigration and open borders have led to chaos. Lax immigration policies have taxed social services and fueled multicultural identity politics, often to the benefit of boutique leftist political agendas.
Two, globalization enriched the cosmopolitan elites who found worldwide markets for their various services. New global markets and commerce meant Western nations outsourced, offshored and ignored their own industries and manufacturing (or anything dependent on muscular labor that could be replaced by cheaper workers abroad).
Three, unelected bureaucrats multiplied and vastly increased their power over private citizens. The targeted middle classes lacked the resources to fight back against the royal armies of tenured regulators, planners, auditors, inspectors and adjustors who could not be fired and were never accountable.

Ping. Very good stuff from VDH.
Hence Brexit, Trump, Morrison, etc.
The elites assert that Farage, Trump, Morrison, et al are _causing_ the “uprising”. They’re not of course: they are the results of an uprising...
Concur entirely. I am extremely angry that a group of unelected gray bureaucrats at the FBI, CIA, Justice and State Departments huddled in secret to alter the results of the presidential election and condescend toward the American middle classes. I remember one good thing Tillerson did as Secretary of State - some group of senior bureaucrat Foreign Service Officers met once a week at the State Department to determine US foreign policy in key areas. They had never been appointed to do this, had no formal portfolio or responsibilities, and just decided they were the ones to do this on taxypayer time and the taxpayer dime. Tillerson found out about it and shut the whole thing down, to the wails of their media allies and the Establishment over how he was “wasting” their supposed expertise. All such shadow groups in the federal government need to be sent packing.
Federal agencies here. Exactly the same.
Great article! Exactly what is happening here. Exactly. We’re upset because, basically, the ultra-rich elite are trying to get rid of us and bring in the millions of poor from other countries who have made better slaves.
“If Western nations were really so bad, and so flawed at their founding, why were millions of non-Westerners risking their lives to reach Western soil?”
no, we are not resentful of the wealthy, we are resentful that the elites are so smug and so stupid.
Not really. He forgot offshoring of IT stuff and H1Bs, and the wholesale takeover of tech by India.
‘Western middle classes’ as the author calls them, are so tired of picking up the tab for all the social debris who refuse to take responsibility for themselves
The virtue signaling global socialist Gaia worshipers will never give up. They will have to be beaten back every step of the way.
Dont forget Matteo, Bolsanaro, Orban, etc. This goes way beyond Trump or any one person. The middle class has finally gotten tired of being screwed over at every turn.
I doubt that we people will be able to do much about this but it occurs to me that a Fed Gov run by these Deep Staters is eventually gonna cross swords with these supranational corporate entities that think they have more power then the Deep Staters. Following that interaction there will be real things happen, IMHO. In fact, think about it, it is already starting. The Deep Staters are starting to actually threaten Amazon, Facebook, Google,YouTube, etc. with Trust Busting. It might actually occur to folks like Zuckerberg he has a better ally in Trump than anyone on the left.
Gov workers are immune from layoffs, firings, declining wages that their policies beget.
He gets it.
Excellent! Everyone should read this.
Exactly.
Don’t argue with them—laugh out loud at them.
And beat them. In the polls, of course.
In many of these cases -- the "Yellow Jacket" movement in France, for example -- the popular uprising isn't being carried out by people who are tired of government bureaucrats running their lives. Most of these people actually want their government to do MORE ... but for THEM, not for the elites or the immigrants.
"Freedom" sailed away from these people a long time ago. They never even noticed that it was gone.
One, illegal immigration and open borders have led to chaos.
Two, globalization enriched the cosmopolitan elites
Three, unelected bureaucrats multiplied and vastly increased their power over private citizens.
Four, the new global media reached billions and indoctrinated rather than reported.
Five, academia became politicized as a shrill agent of cultural transformation rather than focusing on education
elites never suffered the firsthand consequences of their own ideological fiats.
Victor Davis Hanson is becoming a national treasure... up there with Greenfield and Sowell... We are blessed.
Yeah, but Fukerberg would only team up with Trump to save his own skin. Hes got zero concern for us little people. He talks a great lefty game to appease the SJW, but at the end of the day, its all about the Benjamins.
Don’t forget the “Senior Executive Service” cabal consisting of over 8,000 unelected bureaucrats running our civil services.
