ORLANDO, Fla. - Imagine not being able to pay cash for some of the toll roads you use every day. It's already happened in and around Miami and near Tampa, but now it is going to be happening in Central Florida.
The Florida Turnpike Enterprise confirmed that all Florida's Turnpike roadways are going to all-electronic tolling in a 70-mile stretch from Osceola County to Sumter County by next summer. According to FTE, the project will take place on Florida's Turnpike from Kissimmee Park Road at milepost 239 to I-75, which is at milepost 309.
"They're going to continue on the toll road like they have before, but they're not going to have to merge, not going to have to slow down prior to that," Florida Turnpike's Katie Mitzner said. "So it's going to be safer. It's going to be more convenient."
Mitzner confirmed that the cash tolls at the Leesburg exit are already being prepped for the changeover.
"The big crux of what is going to be taking place is going to be the installation of a gantry that is going to be going over all four lanes," Mitzner said. "And following that, they will demolish the Leesburg toll plaza."
The new gantry will be built over the existing four lanes of the turnpike, about a half mile south of the existing Leesburg toll plaza at milepost 288. The project will include milling and resurfacing, minor widening, lighting, highway signing, guardrail, toll facilities and other construction and safety improvements.
FTA said customers may encounter lane closures, ramp closures and detours at night, weekends and non-peak travel periods.

So take the side roads. You’ll get there. Just takes longer.
Having been to FL for work many times, the toll roads are havoc for we visitors and tourists. Sometimes you don’t know there’s a toll. Sometimes you need exact change. Once or twice, I admit, I just drove without paying - figured they’d bill my rental company. I like living in a state without toll roads.
Now there is nothing wrong per se with private roads charging a toll. State roads, well, I guess the citizens of the state have decided but my opinion is charge a gas tax to amortize the cost. The whole state benefits from roads whether you particularly drive on them or not. I live in a state that regularly pilfers all excise taxes for the general fund but if it were managed properly it is approximately equitable to charge some pennies per gallon to cover the costs of all roads and highways.
Some freeper called the I-4 the DIE4. I call the Happiest Highway in Earth for all the times the family drove down 95 and made the exit to I4 indicating we are close to Disney and like. I remember when the I4 was just two lanes for each carriageway.
Classic government expansion. Tolls were originally sold as a way to pay for the construction of new roads. Soon the revenues are absorbed by the government’s endless appetite for more money.
The cashless tolls will increase the cost to average folks who don’t have a toll tag, with toll by mail costing a factor of two or three times more than the actual toll that was originally paid in cash.
As technology keeps expanding, we are screwed.
Theyll just mail them a bill.
An even safer method — is to discontinue the crappy tolls and just get rid of them.
Given all the taxes we pay the government(s) should provide open free roads.
“Looks like I wont ever visit and spend my money in that State, for the rest of my life.
“
Adios to FLA.
What if you are out of state? Do they have the mailing address of every car in the US?

How will tourist without a toll tag pay these tools?

The Dallas area toll system has been cashless for several years. Theres not even people at the toll booths. Theres two ways to pay. The most popular and least expensive is by toll tag as theres a discount. Those who dont have a toll tag such as infrequent local users and out of area users will be billed by mail.. License plates are photographed and run through a database for billing info. Personally, I like the system.
From your license plate.
FL good despite tolls....
Is Florida majority “diversity” yet? My sister in law (in Sarasota) said all the people in her near neighborhood moved and she can’t speak Spanish so she cannot converse with any of the new neighbors. (Since about 5 years ago-—probably all over the place by now.)
Puerto Ricans are supposed to move in to FL and tip the state permanently Dem. Is that happening (or one hurricane to go?)
And then the Africans and Central Americans in upcoming caravan relocations to FL. First ones were delayed in a deal, of course.
“Come on down.”
Hope things are okay where you are. Politicians always “take their toll” wherever we live.

I can see a thriving black-market in fake out of state plates.
They simply ask Obama to supply them. He charges 12 cents per address from his stolen IRS and FBI files at his headquarters not far from the White House. At that rate he makes a fortune.
Says "Now that I'm retired I get a real kick out of things like that."
And why would Florida have any right to look up your information from an out of state plate if you are not even accused of a crime? Any lawful state would tell Florida to go to He**.
That used to be a thing in an ancient Dick Tracy comic.
Only the numbers on the plate could be reconfigured while driving.
I recall a news story, probably 2-3 months old now, of some idgit who got caught doing either that, or having an controllable shield that he’d drop when exiting the booth.
Check your smartphone for the other roads. Sometimes the difference is only a few minutesyet the views are more relaxing.
That is one of the better Elvis movies. Court room scene gets close to My Cousin Vinny
