Dallas Police Chief Renee Hall said that offenders are "forced" to commit crimes due to a lack of job opportunities.
Dallas, TX Dallas Police Chief Renee Hall drew the ire of citizens and law enforcement groups on Monday when she implied that society is to blame for forcing criminals who commit violent acts (video below).
There are socioeconomic issues that are related to crime in individuals in this city, Chief Hall said during a press conference discussing two recent homicides. There are individuals in this city who have returned from prison who cannot find a job, who are not educated.
In those instances, those individuals are forced to commit violent acts, the chief declared.
Many were outraged by Chief Halls comment, including Dallas Police Association President Mike Mata.
The Chief saying that people [are] forced to commit violent acts it places the blame on society and makes the offenders the victim, Mata told KTVT. I dont believe anyone is forced to violently attack another person.
By using the word forced as opposed to choose, Chief Hall placed blame on society, rather than offenders, he said.
I believe in sentencing guidelines reform and educating violators prior to releasing back into society so they can have the best possible chance of not re-offending, Mata continued, but we also have to be accountable for our own actions and never in any way validate an excuse to commit a violent act.
Chief Hall clarified her comment later on Monday night.
There is no excuse for crime, she said, according to KTVT. Crime in general however, is on the rise in Dallas for many reasons. One of them being a lack of resources and opportunity.
Chief Hall said she is in no way using socioeconomic factors as an excuse to commit a crime.
However, we have to work together as a community to remain vigilant and pro-active, she added.
Chief Hall said she has reached out to the citys pastoral community and asked them to help develop ways for citizens to access resources and to resolve disputes nonviolently.
You can watch a clip from Chief Halls press conference in the video below:
BS - while you could possibly excuse away food or medicine theft you CANNOT claim that violent crimes are the fault of a bad economy and then turn around and have the audacity to claim youre not blaming socio-ECONOMIC to excuse crimes.
She needs to be fired immediately as shes a real threat to the force.
“It’s a fair cop, but society is to blame. We’ll be arresting them, too”.
-Monty Python, the church police sketch.

Maybe they should become cops and then they can get paid to commit robbery, assault, kidnapping, lying under oath, and maybe even the occasional murder.
HTML ain't so hard.
America’s indigenous urban peoples believe that violent crime is a legitimate career path, and armed victims are an OSHA violation.
Anytime you have a female police chief, criminals get a free pass on responsibility...
Chief Renee Hall
If they don’t have opportunities, whose fault is that? Who is it who had been pushing for minimum wage increases, occupational licensing, street vending permits, mandatory union membership, etc.?
i do believe it would be beneficial all around for the state to find a couple decent jobs a released felon can start out with, plus assist in getting set up in a place to live
i dont think this is ‘too much help’ and it will assure that any ex-con who wants to live a proper, law-abiding life... can do so
the state keeps many other people who COULD work...on permanent welfare for life, with all kinds of support services. helping an ex-con who wants to go straight get started... is far less expense ...and temporary too.
just my thought. temporary, transitional assistance to get the ex-con on an honest path. after that, its up to him of course, I am not proposing putting him on welfare for life
India has a huge class of people that live on the edge of poverty and below. This type of violence is rare. There is much violence in India and it is a function of religious difference. Most of the violence is a function of Muslims. There is counter violence by the Hindus.
Go Hindus !
Maybe he just doesn't want to deal with arresting anybody. If society is to blame, nobody gets arrested.
I suspect she’s not too bright or well educated. Who did she have to kill to become the chief of the popo?
Time for a new police chief.
This Chief is why murder and other crime rates are going up in Dallas.
