UK’s Nigel Farage Demands A Seat At Brexit Talks

SOUTHAMPTON, England (Reuters) – Nigel Farage demanded a seat at Brexit negotiations on Monday after his new party swept to victory in the United Kingdom’s European Parliament election, warning that he would turn British politics upside down if denied.

Farage, a bombastic 55-year-old commodities broker-turned anti-establishment supremo, won by riding a wave of anger at the failure of Prime Minister Theresa May to take the United Kingdom out of the European Union.

As May’s Conservative Party prepares to pick a new leader, Farage had a warning for the next prime minister: A say in the United Kingdom’s biggest decision since World War Two.

“We should be part of the team now, that’s pretty clear,” Brexit Party leader Farage told Reuters at an election count in the southern English city of Southampton.

After repeated delays to Brexit, Farage said the United Kingdom had to leave the EU on Oct. 31, the current deadline for Britain’s parliament to agree an exit deal. Farage would prefer to leave without a deal.

“If we don’t leave on that day, then you can expect the Brexit Party to repeat this kind of surprise in the next general election,” he said.

While no British leader would allow Farage near EU divorce talks, his proven ability to poach Brexit supporters from both the Conservative and Labour parties will stiffen a belief among leading Conservatives vying to replace May that they must go for a more decisive split from the EU.

DEJA VU

Farage, often pictured with a glass of beer and an elastic grin, is one of Britain’s most recognizable politicians with a rare capacity to polarize opinion. He once posed with Donald Trump in a gilded lift, enraging the British establishment.

What a great nite for Nigel. Steve Bannon had a great nite also. National Populism made a monster move.

I admire Farage for that British reserve -- but I'd like to see him call them out using a phrase like, "pieces of ****". Thanks E. Pluribus Unum. BTW, go Boris!

Nigel Farage needs to start another new party — BREXIT NOW.

If Britain’s new prime minister starts dragging his feet on withdrawal, the new BREXIT NOW-ers would gain strength day by day while the Conservatives would lose strength day by day, until BREXIT NOW became the leading party in Britain.

Unfortunately the combined votes for reamain parties outnumbered the Brexit parties. I don’t have a clear understanding of how the British system works, so what happens now?

Not much. This was for the EU parliament so it has no direct effect on the UK parliament other than requiring a lot of changing of their knickers among the Conservative and Labour leaders.

In France, Le Pen beat Macron by a mere 1% and she demanded Macron dissolve parliament!

Why is that? What have they got to lose?

If he screws up the works it will be on the BBC in minutes, he’s embarrassed and they win.

If he gets things moving, they can claim credit, they win.

...his proven ability to poach Brexit supporters from both the Conservative and Labour parties...

To nitpick a bit, perhaps, but the term "poach" doesn't quite capture the fact that significant portions of both Labour and Conservative parties voted for Brexit and their party leaders went the other way. And what Farage did to attract them runs contrary to certain hidebound political theories: his party has no platform beside a single issue, hence no barrier against either Labour or Conservative voter who feels betrayed on that issue.

That argues a party without longevity once that issue is resolved (assuming that it is). It is also a glaring admonition to the two formerly mainstream parties to get with the program. So far neither one has. And there isn't a lot of solace in the claim by Labour that the Conservatives got hurt more than they did, which is perfectly true but rather beside the point. Putting a one-issue party in power is still putting it in power.

The real problem is that there isn't a lot of time for either Labour or Conservative party to smooth the thing over in the face of a looming general election, even with the help of the media, which seem unsurprisingly slow to acknowledge what just happened. They'd be fools to seat Farage at the talks; they'd be bigger fools not to. Interesting times.

You are correct that REMAIN got more seats in the EU parliament than LEAVE parties.

What happens now in the British government? Legally nothing.

Politically you will see the Tories taking a hard Brexit stance to steal votes from Farage
