Illinois Republicans unhappy at the influence the Democrat-controlled city of Chicago holds over the state are looking at trying to blow the Windy City out of the state altogether -- despite the long odds that such a push would face.
A new report by Pew Trusts' Stateline shines light on an effort by the states GOP to turn the state red by turning the blue city into its own state.

Thanks, interesting post!
You bet. Still, I don’t know how he thought I was from Ohio. Apparently the poster is 87 (!)
I would rather have Alexandria and Falls Church and Fairfax, Prince William and Arlington Counties in VA join DC and Baltimore and Montgomery, Prince George’s, Charles and Howard Counties (and part of Baltimore County) in MD for a State of New Columbia that would leave the rest of VA and the rest of MD as GOP states. As for DE, I would give its two southern counties to the new MD, but then add Philadelphia and its Dem suburbs in Montgomery, Delaware and Bucks Counties, PA and in Camden County, NJ to the only remaining county in DE (Wilmigton’s New Castle County) to make it a Democrat state that leaves PA as safely GOP.
Good ideas. But the name State of New Columbia will not be acceptable. Perhaps that new state could be called New Indigenous.
” it’s the only way to be sure “
I note your opposition to the creation of Chicago as a separate city state which I share while offering no alternative solution and minimizing any attempt to consider return to a previous state constitution which is easy to do.
My reply was prompted by your characterization of conditions that would occur if Illinois did return to its previous state constitution. Which could be expected from anyone who anyone who comes from another area and has not participated in Illinois Republican politics during that period of time when it was successfully functioning.
The party fell apart when that change in it’s constitution removed minority representation at the state representative level. Using the political results you furnished which are post that 1980 period when the change took effect ignore its previous success offering political alternatives. Which offers a worthy consideration to return to as a solution .
Your apology is noted. Aherm.
My location is irrelevant. Given that you are presently in Wisconsin (another state I have family heritage in going back to around statehood), I could argue you should not be discussing IL politics. I study politics from coast to coast, which gives me the right to discuss it. Curiously, it was a former Chicago Congressman, who served in the 1950s, who deemed me to be a political historian (he also happened to be a Democrat) in the 1990s.
Carving out Chicago/Cook County as a separate state would not automatically resolve the problems present in IL state government. You would merely just be creating a corrupt, one-party city-state (close to 80% Democrat) that would also seek to influence and suck dry the resources of the state it exited. Instead of having one state with problems and corruption, you’d have two.
You’d have the same problem carving NYC out of NY.
Your experience with Chicago/Cook County politics, while laudable, occurred nearly 50 years ago. This is no longer the same city controlled by Richard J. Daley with a modest and semi-influential GOP. That is gone with the wind.
I told you that returning the state to the “Big Legislature” prior to the early ‘80s would not restore the good ole days, either. As I explained to you in prior posts, all you would end up doing is getting leftist Democrats elected in GOP areas (with the 3 member scheme) and getting few or zero Republicans elected in urban Democrat areas (with 2 Democrats and an ultraleft “Independent” as the 3rd member - and if you did get a “Republican” out of such a district, they’d be a total leftist stooge). Indeed, such a situation would result in even MORE Democrat power and representation, with some corrupt urban leftist RINO puppets doing the bidding of Speaker Madigan and undermining the Republican party.
It’s for that reason and others that I dismiss your proposition entirely out of hand. It won’t work and it won’t restore the party as you remembered it from the 1960s and ‘70s. The people and groups from that time that might’ve made it work have long since passed from the scene.
That was, as usual, brilliant, DJ...
Heh.
Tennessee - go Buckeyes!!!
Oh, yeah.
Thank you.
I’ve said it before, I’ll say it again... it’s foolish to get into a political history match against you...
You got this sh*t wired, brother... :^)
“My GGG-grandfather was the son-in-law of one of ILs Founding Fathers who drew up the state constitution at Kaskaskia 200 years ago.”
Who dat? I forgot.
I love #2.
I am for anything that nets us Senate seat. Crook County on it’s own would add 2 GOP seats from Restinois.
Not to mention electoral votes.
I’m not really concerned that “stooge” Republicans would get elected, that wouldn’t happen unless democrats vote in our primary. This is one front where we are better equipped then the past because it’s easier to get info now, the fakes can be called out.
But the rest of your points, Some (Black) districts even with Republicans voting all 3 votes for 1 Republican still wouldn’t elect a Republican and might elect a Green instead of 3 democrats, yes. Plus nothing would stop idiot extra Republicans from running which would prevent us from having the necessary ONE GOP candidate per rat district.
Meanwhile EVERY GOP district would elect at least 1 rat. That math will never work for us.
I’d love a system that could elect Republicans from Chicago and not eff us over even worse than we are now. It would be tricky to invent one that would actually work today. The districts would need to have more than 3 members and it would have to be some kind of proportional representation rather than the old plurality voting. Too European and fruity? Maybe. The DC system wouldn’t work because as you said as soon as libs realized they could run “independents” that fell apart.
But I understand your point in bringing it up Moses and it’s a good one.
I’ll give you an example of trickery. The legendary Richard J. Daley ran for and won the “Big” House in 1936 from his legislative district — as a Republican (in fact, the GOP had nominated him as a replacement for a deceased incumbent) ! He promptly switched to the Democrats effective the start of the 1937 legislature so his district had 3 Dems. He didn’t have to worry about repercussions in 1938 (since they couldn’t have 3 Dems winning the district outright), he jumped into a State Senate race in 1938 and won.

Or they could simply run candidates in all of the races. The Democrats ran unopposed in roughly 1/3 of General Assembly seats.
Hard to control the state when you give up that many seats.
