THE GREAT AMERICAN SONGBOOK

HAROLD ARLEN

AT THE CIRCUS: “LYDIA THE TATTOOED LADY”

The Marx Brothers had carved out a successful niche at Paramount, and their zany method of barely controlled chaos had taken them out of vaudeville and Broadway, and established them in Hollywood. Irving Thalberg at MGM had begun the process of wooing the brothers, and Louie B. Mayer inked the deal.

Mayer added romantic subplots to the Marx Brother movies featuring photogenic actors and actresses under contract to the studio. Groucho didn’t like this, but it added a lot of box office appeal to the Marx Brothers’ films at MGM and added to the money everyone made. What clinched the deal was that Mayer built a theater on the MGM lot where the Marx Brothers could try out their bits before live audiences to see how well they played. This gave the guys a chance to polish their material for the movies.

The songs that Harold and Yip wrote for the brothers weren’t recorded by many others, but they made their way into the songbook because no one could resist Groucho. Everyone who has ever seen this movie can sing the chorus. This is the clip from the film.

Groucho Marx: “Lydia the Tattooed Lady” (1939)

This is a video clip from “The Dick Cavett Show” in 1969. He’s in the last years of his long life, has trouble holding the tune, but he’s only slowed down a little.

We Need Each Other

Bible in a Year: 1 Chronicles 4–6; John 6:1–21

Let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, since as members of one body you were called to peace. Colossians 3:15

While on a hike with my kids, we discovered a light, springy green plant growing in small clumps on the trail. According to a signpost, the plant is commonly called deer moss, but it’s not actually a moss at all. It’s a lichen. A lichen is a fungus and an alga growing together in a mutualistic relationship in which both organisms benefit from each other. Neither the fungus nor the alga can survive on its own, but together they form a hardy plant that can live in some alpine areas for up to 4,500 years. Because the plant can withstand drought and low temperatures, it’s one of the only food sources for caribou (reindeer) in deep winter.

The relationship between the fungus and the alga reminds me of our human relationships. We rely on each other. To grow and flourish, we need to be in relationship with each other.

Paul, writing to believers in Colossae, describes how our relationships should look. We are to clothe ourselves with “compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience” (Colossians 3:12). We ought to forgive each other and live in peace “as members of one body” (v. 15).

It’s not always easy to live in peace with our families or friends. But when the Spirit empowers us to exhibit humility and forgiveness in our relationships, our love for each other points to Christ (John 13:35) and brings glory to God.

By Amy Peterson

Reflect & Pray

In what ways do your relationships point to Jesus? How can you pursue peace?

Holy Spirit, fill us with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness, and patience toward each other so the world may see Your love in us.

Not much for music any more. A soldier called in to the Viet Nam radio station with a song request. The Disc jockey said what do you want me to play? The soldier answered I don't cadre just play it LOUD, I am artillery.

The song ran right up to the edge of being bawdy without crossing the line. This is a clip from another MGM classic, “The Philadelphia Story” from 1940, where the supposedly well-bred daughter of the family breaks into the first verse of this song. Virginia Weidler’s fractured French, supplemented by Katherine Hepburn’s fractured French, is hilarious in its own right.

It’s unfortunate that Groucho didn’t live long enough to appear on this show because it would have been a lot of fun for everybody. This video clip is from 1977.
