Men are afraid to mentor women after #MeToo and it hurts us all: study

Men are scared of women now.

LeanIn.org and SurveyMonkey’s new #MentorHer poll reveals Friday that 60% of male managers report feeling “too nervous” about being accused of harassment to interact with women in “common workplace” activities such as mentoring, socializing and one-on-one meetings.

That’s a 32% spike from 2018, with an additional 36% of men saying they now actively avoid women in junior-level positions — effectively chopping down their shot at climbing the corporate ladder.

“The vast majority of managers and senior leaders are men,” says Sheryl Sandberg, Facebook COO, SurveyMonkey board member and founder of LeanIn.Org, in a statement. “If they are reluctant even to meet one-on-one with women, there’s no way women can get an equal shot at proving themselves.”

~snip~

Women — and especially women of color — don’t get the same amount of mentoring as men, “which means we’re not getting an equal seat at the table,” Sandberg says. “It’s not enough to not harass us, you need to not ignore us, either.”

Scared?

The writer obviously has a problem. Is it limited vocabulary, limited intellect, or a hyphenated last name?

Calm reason counsels that one weigh the possible costs and benefits of mentoring. The benefits are negligible, the potential costs staggering. Since mentoring is not a workplace right, it's wise to " just say no."

MS Sandberg has a well developed sense of entitlement...and she's counseling her sisters to develop the same. What sane person wouldn't decide the drama and headaches are unneeded?

Good points.

And if I (60 year old male) were to mentor anyone, I’d be fired ASAP.

For I would counsel young people today to distrust and be wary of today’s corporate lifestyle. I would tell them to ignore and disregard the lies they’ve been told in school. I’d tell them to find a man in charge of a department and go to work for him. And most of all do not go near the females in Human Resources.

You know - normal business practices that worked for us 30-40 years ago.

My thoughts exactly. That said, the chances that it would go the other way are overwhelming.

Both of you (post 36 and 37) said the same thing in so many words.

Great insight you two.

I am a night security guard at a city owned marina which got trashed pretty bad by the hurricane last October. The big lights were all out and I was instructed that the marina was closed to the public at night and to tell folks that came out there that it was closed and they needed to leave. I once approached a woman parked in a Prius the way I had developed to make such approaches. She was a skinny middle-aged bleached blonde. Her windows were open and her motor was running. She was intent on her smartphone or tablet. I walked around in front of the car so that she would see me in the headlights and had one finger pointing to the word” Security” on my shirt. She did not respond at all. I flicked my very powerful flashlight at her and she did not notice. I finally approached her open window and said as politely as I could, “Excuse me ma’am...” Her head popped up. Her eyes got inordinately hugely open. she shrieked and jammed her shifter into reverse with her foot cramming the accelerator to the floor. She skidded in an arc to turn around continuing to shriek. She jammed it into D and drove out of there with her foot still to the floor. I could hear her continuing to shriek as she sped out of the marina and up the hill. I could hear her still as she blew through the stop sign a block out of the marina. I wished I could be wherever she was going to to hear what she had to tell whoever was there. I expected a policeman to visit me later but none came.

Anyone, especially managers of any sex is vulnerable to this now. Granted, more men are being targeted.

But my point is this whole victimhood celebration along with the anti Male, antiwhite, anti-conservative, anti-freedom, anti-American, environment has become volatile.

It is their weapon of control.

Notice the author’s name and you get an idea why he might say that

Well, no, I don’t. But I don’t base my bigotry on last names. I’m more of a racist.

You’re safe if the other person is white or oriental and male.

Good luck with that.

Sexual harassment DOES happen, but it isn’t epidemic.

When harassment is defined as complimenting a woman on her clothing or saying “good morning” with the wrong expression on your face, I’d say sexual harassment is and will always be pandemic.

That old toxic masculinity

AggroBroad

"What are you so aggravated about?"

"I spent over an hour putting on all of my make-up, coordinating my pants and blouse and doing my hair.  And l had barely got out the front door when some strange guy harassed me!"

"Wow.  What did he do?"

"He noticed!"

I stopped meeting female students in any place that wasn’t public

I settled on something like that with my wife.
If I had to discuss something with her that was
going to put her into a hissy fit, I’d take her
to dinner and discuss it with other people around.
She could contain herself if she had to.

I’ve been there. I once passed gas when delivering a document to a VPs executive assistant. She tried to file a harassment charge against me.

Fortunately, she had already filed so many baseless harassment charges that the corporate attorney had forbidden her from filing any more without approval from his office. All she could do was complain to my supervisor. An uncomfortable interview with the corporate security manager followed.
