Notre Dame cathedral has caught fire, according to the Parisian fire service and eyewitnesses.
Footage posted online shows a large fire engulfing the upper part of the cathedral, with the flames licking around its two bell towers.
A major operation was under way, the fire department added, while a city hall spokesman said on Twitter that the area was being cleared.
Officials in Paris said the fire could be linked to renovation works being carried out at the cathedral.
It comes after France's Saint Sulpice church , used in the filming of Dan Browns Da Vinci Code thriller, caught fire in March.

couldn’t agree more.
I heard the idiot at first report the structure is “2,400 ft. tall.” Really Shep? Any proof of that?
This fills me with great sadness. I hope it is an accident.
Not necessarily DO it, but cause it. Happens when youre carousing around. Ive not paid much attention but it seems sometimes their protests gat a bit out of hand. Negative things happen with raucous crowds
I suspect they will be blamed, no matter what the cause actually is.
Shep Smith got a call from somebody who seemed to want to somehow, quietly, blame the Muslims.
Shep scared the living bejeesus out of me, yelling at the guy, telling him he’ll not make accusations on HIS watch.
I suppose we should keep quiet for a while but you know what everyone on this planet is thinking.
Same for that kid thrown off the balcony of the Mall of America in Minnesota.
Something fishy about that.
Some obvious questions.
Were there workers present where the fire started?
Were there workers present anywhere in the cathedral, or other personnel?
Are there video cameras all around Paris are is most US cities?
Looks like we’d start hearing some eyewitness accounts soon, rather than the standard and instant denials that terrorism was involved.
I’m seeing on twitter that the entire interior is ablaze. Also on France 24 that prosecutors will open an investigation. Not convinced this was an accident.
The best they can hope for is to keep it from spreading from the center. But, Hope is not a good plan.
How do you say “Reichstag Fire” in French?
Yes.
Fire has spread to at least one of the rectangular buildings.
Thank you very much.
Good grief... frigging Hannity, TOO?
He mentions Notre Dame for a couple of minutes, but has now moved in to more “important” things - like golf.

WHAT AN IDIOT!!
About 50 years later, my son, an art lover, sent me a very old print of the Cathedral. It's framed and on my wall.
Whether the ‘muzz’ had anything to do with this or not, I can pretty much guarantee that there are plenty of sweets being passed about, and plenty of ululating and celebrations occurring at ‘muzz’ terrorist training centres, aka religious centres in France tonight. Send ‘em all back home, up to the third and fourth generation.
Would not surprise me one bit.
I have done emergency planning for hospitals and banks.
While it would be nice to have a plan for every contingency, there are some where the plan was evacuate and account for staff.
You cannot save everything.
right about playing the clown??
