Notre Dame cathedral has caught fire, according to the Parisian fire service and eyewitnesses.
Footage posted online shows a large fire engulfing the upper part of the cathedral, with the flames licking around its two bell towers.
A major operation was under way, the fire department added, while a city hall spokesman said on Twitter that the area was being cleared.
Officials in Paris said the fire could be linked to renovation works being carried out at the cathedral.
It comes after France's Saint Sulpice church , used in the filming of Dan Browns Da Vinci Code thriller, caught fire in March.

We know what Smith would be saying if this was a mosque burning down.
That article is from 2016.
Voltaire famously complained that if all the pieces of the true cross were real, the cross must have consumed all of the forests of Lebanon. But Voltaire was a slanderer and satirist.
In truth, tiny splinters of the True Cross were placed in hundreds of churches, but the combined weight of most all of them would add up to one baseball bat. There are a few much larger pieces.
Think of it: suppose the True Cross weighed 50 kg (110 pounds). Many of the spliters weigh as little as 1/10th of a gram. So, that’s 500,000 potential relics.
OTOH, I doubt that was the main reason anyone protested the Catholic Church.
> So they’re doing renovations on an architectural treasure and they don’t set up extraordinary fire suppression measures? <
A poster at another site said that when it comes to huge historical projects like this, professional firewatchers are hired to keep an eye on things. I wonder how true that is.
I’m not sure why the island is being evacuated, but my guess is so that firefighters can more easily access the structure. I remember that there are some narrow streets near the cathedral.
Shepherd Smith is playing PC cop by cutting off the French official (Phillipe Karsenty)who was stating that French Catholic churches are being desecrated regularly and he thiinks it is more than renovation work. BTW I rarely watchFox with SS. H’ed fit in better on The View.
You invite radical Muslims into your country and this is the outcome. Obama did it to the USA and now we have radicals in Congress. https://www.newsweek.com/spate-attacks-catholic-churches-france-sees-altars-desecrated-christ-statue-1370800
Rush has been on the radio talking about how this is going to be linked to climate change.
He needed to treat this with the seriousness it deserved instead of playing clown.
Tin-ear.
Rush is probably right about that.
I think thats always been true - we are just awake enough to know it now
... did anyone just hear people clap after Shep said “Notre Dame is burning to the ground”?! Huh?!
Is the scaffolding on fire too or is that just a reflection I see?
During the fifty years I was building projects, I was fortunate to not have one catch fire. Had a flood from a broken pipe ruin some carpet and drywall, but no fire.
That being said, I saw this happen to others any number of times and for the most bizarre reasons. Saw completed large stores burn a number of time partly from excessive schedule pressure contributing. Extension cords can short, pilot lights can ignite fumes from paint and solvents, sunlight can make something highly flammable burst into flame. I have seen temporary lighting be at fault.
I will save the debate over relics for another time. Certainly the building and art work is a great loss
I hope this is NOT from the Yellow Vests, who have not been making a real good name for themselves. Hope it really is just a bad accident.
It is heartbreaking.
Were physical and spiritual creatures, so physical reminders of the spiritual remind us of refocusing from daily worries to our spiritual relationship with our Creator.
How many people through the centuries have, because of this cathedral, been reminded to lift their heart and minds to God?
Its a horrible loss for the world.
“The new mosque could use that”
They probably already have the plat and building permit.
If one were to think about it, given the wooden frame that held up the roof, a fire at the base might not have had the same effect.
It's the same thing with the World Trade Center. If the planes had hit lower in the building, it might not have come down because of the thicker framing at the lower part of the building. The fire at the WTC weakened the steel which caused the top 20 floors to collapse, pancaking the rest of the building.
In this case, making the effort to set the fire at the top, away from the reach of the firefighters, might have ensured the total destruction of the cathedral that a lower fire would not.
Just my speculation.

Why would the Yellow Vests do that?
It may be for criminal investigation reasons as well, consider the whole island as a crime scene. I have a feeling the French nation is going to lose their collective cool over this one. Maybe they will listen to Le Pen now.
