Majority Leader Mitch McConnell said Republican senators running for re-election next year should not couple their messaging to President Trump but rather run independent campaigns built around how theyve helped their states.
The Kentucky Republican, who is himself up for reelection, said senators races are big enough that they can escape the gravity of the presidential race and establish themselves on their own.
Mr. McConnell also said Republicans must and can reverse disastrous losses in the suburbs that cost them their House majority in Novembers elections.
Theres no good reason for your typical suburban resident to be frightened by this Republican Senate, he told reporters in a briefing on policy and politics as the 100-day mark of the new Congress approaches.
He said Democrats have helped the GOP with its case by running so far to the left on issues such as the Green New Deal, a sweeping environmental and social policy overhaul, and "He said Democrats have helped the GOP with its case by running so far to the left on issues such as the Green New Deal, a sweeping environmental and social policy overhaul, and "Medicare for All, a government-sponsored universal health care plan.
Republican senators can tell voters theyll guard against that sort of change, he said. From a Senate point of view Im going to be arguing, and Im encouraging my colleagues to argue, that were the firewall against socialism in this country, Mr. McConnell said.
Republicans hold 53 seats in the Senate right now and have 21 of those seats up in 2020. Democrats are defending 12 seats.

Whatever be the case, the Republicans lost the House of Representatives in 2018 due to the Democrats being allowed to steal multiple elections.
Remember all the Governorships they tried to steal in the Florida, Georgia and Arizona? Remember how they kept find boxes full of ballots that were 9 to 1 in favor of Democrats. This is even though it was in districts that were more evenly divided.
They completely stole a bunch of seats in California that were won by Republicans.
The Democrats are very good at stealing elections. If the Republicans continue to be EXTREMELY WEAK on election fraud, then they can forget it.
The Democrats are very good at getting dead people votes, registering illegals to vote, voting multiple times in multiple districts, States and manufacturing votes that they find in an office or warehouse on election day. See Project Veritas videos that expose this if you think I'm full of crap.
McConnell goes on the list for when the shtf.
...but rather run "independent" campaigns built around how theyve helped their states.
Yes, that makes *some* sense -- assuming that by "independent" is NOT meant, "DNC talking points".
It looks like Cocaine Mitch has been sampling the product.
That won’t work.
Is this POS going to be primaried?
Bush League Republicans MUST be replaced.
Bush League Republicans want to help the Democrats get a permanent majority through amnesty.
For 2020, the ones up are, Flimsey Grahamnesty, Thom Tillis, Gardner, McSally, Daines, Collins, Cornyn, Capito, Enzi, Rounds, Sasse, Hyde-Smith, McConnell.
They all should have primary challengers.
Trump should be active in the state primaries to get his supporters to elect candidates that will support his agenda. Then, watch how quick The Turtle and the other weak sisters attach themselves to Trump.
He wants the Democrats to take control of the Senate. I will not vote for someone who does not support President Trump.
Gutless wimp.
This works for me as I will vote for Trump & his few supporters. All others will be passed over.

This moron is tilting so far left I wouldn’t be surprised if he changed to a DRAT.
Adam McConnell or Mitch Pelosi....
Just another Rino Quitter
It’s not that they don’t get it. They refuse to get it.
No matter what this idiot says, we must vote GOP in 2020 to keep the Senate! That is the crucial battle!
Hack, spit!
Definitely throw Bevin or another legit younger conservative against Mitch.
There will be 22 Republican Senate seats on the line, while Democrats will only need to protect 12 seats.
Here is the list of the senators whose seats will be on the ballot in 2020,
Lamar Alexander (R-Tennessee)
Shelley Moore Capito (R-West Virginia)
Bill Cassidy (R-Louisiana)
Susan Collins (R-Maine)
John Cornyn (R-Texas)
Tom Cotton (R-Arkansas)
Steve Daines (R-Montana)
Mike Enzi (R-Wyoming) Joni Ernst (R-Iowa)
Cory Gardner (R-Colorado)
Lindsey Graham (R-South Carolina)
Cindy Hyde-Smith (R-Mississippi) -- Hyde-Smith was appointed by Mississippi Gov. Phil Bryant to fill the seat vacated by Sen. Thad Cochran who resigned due to health issues. She competed in the 2018 special election to fill the term.
James Inhofe (R-Oklahoma)
Jon Kyl (R-Arizona) -- It is expected that there will be an open special election in 2020 for the seat because Kyl has said he will not run in 2020. A full six-year term election will take place in 2022.
Mitch McConnell (R-Kentucky)
David Perdue (R-GA)
Jim Risch (R-Idaho)
Pat Roberts (R-Kansas)
Mike Rounds (R-South Dakota)
Ben Sasse (R-Nebraska)
Dan Sullivan (R-Alaska)
Thom Tillis (R-North Carolina)
The deep state speaks.
I’m under the impression that the best way to lose as a republican is to distance yourself from trump. That being said, Mitch may have a point. Thing is, a lot of Democrats and centrists may be sick and tired of the left taking over the democrats, but they still think Trump is a loon. So, a republican that distances himself from Trump just may get their vote, while the trump supporters will still hold their nose and vote for him/her.
The problem is that it is not enough to just get democrats to not vote for the democrat. The goal is to get them to bother to vote at all, and then for the republican.
Just thinking out loud.
