An experimental cancer vaccine showed promise in a small clinical trial, according to a study in Nature Medicine.

Mount Sinai tested the treatment in 11 patients with lymphoma.

The vaccine is used in people who already have cancer. It’s not preventive like the flu shot.

experimental cancer “vaccine” showed promising results in a small clinical trial of patients with lymphoma, according to a study published Monday in the journal Nature Medicine.

Researchers at New York’s Mount Sinai Hospital tested the treatment in 11 patients with lymphoma. Their results were successful enough to warrant another clinical trial in March on lymphoma patients as well as breast and head-and-neck cancer.

Researchers said some patients in the initial human trial went into full remission for months or even years.

"It's definitely proof of concept, but larger studies are definitely needed and additional strategies to try to get more than three out of 11 patients to respond,"

March is 11 months away. Why not sooner.

I suspect that cancer will be cured just about the time I die of old age.

The research was funded by The Damon Runyon Cancer Research Foundation, the Cancer Research Institute and Merck. Celldex and Oncovir provided the materials for the clinical trial and the lab work.

Would you look at that?

Promising Research and no government money.

How is that possible?

Sarcasm in case you didn’t recognize it.

Can you even IMAGINE a US government agency capable of pulling off such a wonderful feat these days? After NASA in the ‘60s and’ 70s it became impossible for that to happen. People lost their patriotism, Puritan work ethic, and became stupid as a result of our failed education system.

It seems that Israel might have come up with something for cancer but the media isn’t going to give credit to THEM.

A lot of people (many whom do their share of griping about big pharma), believe that "most drug development" is funded by the government. Ergo, they also believe that drugs should be much cheaper as a result.

While it's true the NIH throws around billions in research dollars each year--and some of that research may be used in part or whole by large pharma companies, it's a stretch to say that NIH funds the majority of drug development.

For starters, the body of medical research comes from many sources, all the way back to Hippocrates. We've learned much through collaborations like the Genome Project. Learning about various diseases like cancer still requires significant input from R&D pharma companies. Knowing about a disease, is not the same as developing a cure, and spending the 10 years or so that it takes to conduct (and pay for) clinical trials.

It’s the partnership between companies and the government which brings these cures to fruition. Then the politicians get involved and screw it all up.

Hate to be a downer, but I have known 7 people with lymphoma including my FIL.
Every one of them went into full remission during the course of their disease.
Every one of them is no longer with us.

Clearly the path to curing cancer looks like finding a way to get the body’s immune system to attack the cancer cells. When that code is unlocked, most cancers should be no more harmful than a common cold. Oh for that day to come!!
