NEW HANOVER COUNTY, NC (WECT) - A New Hanover County man was arrested on animal cruelty charges after he allegedly failed to provide fresh water and food to his pet fish and abandoned it after he was evicted from his home last month.

Michael Ray Hinson, 53, was taken into custody on Wednesday and charged with three counts of misdemeanor cruelty to animals and one count of abandonment of an animal. He was given a $4,000 unsecured bond and later released from jail.

Lt. Jerry Brewer, spokesperson for the New Hanover County Sheriff’s Office, said Hinson was evicted from his home on Two Chopt Road on Friday, March 22. Deputies with the agency’s civil unit went to the home the following Monday and noticed that Hinson left behind an Oscar fish that was in poor health and swimming in a dirty tank.

Why should he do that?

Do you do that with rats you find?

And these same people think it’s ok to abort a human being under a certain age because they consider him/her a tadpole. Oh wait.. Update.. Now they consider a fully formed baby out of the womb less important than a tadpole.

Yes, you are perfectly entitled to eat that cow or whatever, but you are not entitled to subject it to torture or gross neglect such as leaving it to starve.

I say this as someone who eats cow on a daily basis, and fish for that matter.

This guy had sole control of his animal and he abused it by neglect. Not acceptable.

I do not believe a law should be in place for this.

My daughter and her roommate lived next to a guy in an apartment in Honolulu. He walked away from his apartment and never came back — and he left his poor kitty behind! My daughter and her roommate got the super to open the place and they took in the kitty and cared for it. It was a real sweet, good natured cat. Roommate took the kitty with her back to Boston when she left Hawaii.

What an awful thing to do, abandoning a kitty in an apartment. Fortunately they heard the kitty and did the right thing.

I left the rat with the vet to euthanize.
But while I was gone, the little bugger
convinced them he was only a mouse.
He’s back home now, and pissed.

Its an obvious case of selective enforcement of laws.

They targeted this guy for something.

I just checked online. That fish is worth $10-15, maybe a little more depending on the size.

His court costs will be 10x that.
This seems unfair.

I raised pigs (3) each time twice for the freezer. The meat turned out great. We ate fresh farm raised pork for 3 years. Those pigs thought they were pets. I never treated them as pets. I may have treated them exceptionally well because that was the point. I fed them fresh veggies out of the garden, created a pig swimming hole, gave them many acres to run on an even create their own home on (the decided the pen wasn’t home and moved into a wooded under brush sink hole). It was fun but honestly a little sad that day I took them to slaughter house. They were very tasty. Am I crazy. No. I am more in tune with reality. I will do it again when I have more time

Btw. Never raise full bread pigs for meat. The hybrid do much better. I got lucky on the first batch.

He should have fed the fish to his cat.

Tired of your pet fish. FLUSH goes the toilet and all evidence goes down the drain. Case closed.

Next up: no-knock warrants for suspected fish abuse.

The fish will continue to recover at The Fish Room in Wilmington, and then will be up for adoption at Animal Services.

Poor guy will probably get as bill for this as well.

This is one of the stupidest stories I've ever read.

Letting your fish die is not animal cruelty. Can someone in New Hanover County, North Carolina please put grownups back in charge?

Now THAT is really cruel. The chlorine in the water would burn the sensitive mucous membranes in the fish's gills. It would like be shoving you into a gas chamber of chlorine gas. If the fish somehow survived, it could find its way into local waterways and then be an unwanted invasive species. If he didn't want the oscar any more, he should have given it to a local pet shop or even the local humane society. Petfinder.com has a section with fish for rehoming, for example.

The environment in that neglected tank is far more cleaner than that which those fish usually live in.......Should have flushed it.

They’ll break down the door and kill your protective dog.
