Some 50 years ago, in 1964, 42 percent of Americans smoked cigarettes. Smoking in bars and offices was normal and cigarettes were given to soldiers as part of military rations. Half of American physicians smoked. Ads for cigarettes bombarded the American public. That year, the surgeon general released a report outlining the health risks of smoking. Two years later, only 40 percent of Americans said that they believed smoking was a major cause of cancer.

“Some 50 years ago, in 1964”

Perhaps simple math will be thinkable.

In 50 years, Africa will have finally emerged from tribalism, built a continental infrastructure, and will rival East Asia as a manufacturing entity.

I hope so.

Parking lots will change immensely, if not disappear altogether.
Self-driving cars will drop you off, then either go find somewhere to park (no need for human convenience, as it will come get you on request), or will contribute to massive traffic congestion caused by idle vehicles driving in circles when electricity cost of doing so is less than renting a parking space for a given duration.

Don't count on any of that. I work professionally in a field where vehicle automation has major implications, and I firmly believe -- as outlandish as this may seem -- that we are further away from self-driving vehicles today than we were five years ago.

What's happening is that as the technology gets more refined, the costs are getting higher and the number of potential users who really want a self-driving car is shrinking.

People will give up “conspicuous consumption“? ROTFLMAO!!!!

I stopped right there. No need to read any more of this drivel. Clearly these are people “thinking” with their ideology and not with any sense of history or understanding of the human condition. People will ALWAYS try to stand out from the crowd, want higher status, etc etc.

Sad to say, that as much as I like football, Rugby and martial arts, the science is going to show that even a few head impacts to a pre-adult brain is a really bad thing.

This bothers me a great deal because manly action, absorbing pain, teamwork, competitiveness, and other qualities that these sports teach is vitally important to the making of a Man.

But it is beginning to look like the data suggest the brain can be damaged in lots of ways by g-forces, particularly when it is still growing.

Sad

That Islam was ever a peaceful religion.

...I only say it because there’s still legions of people that still believe Islam means “peace”.

It will also mean that in 50 years we will have had civil wars over it.

Freedom of speech, religion... and even the press is under attack. There are more than a few countries still described as “liberal democracies” where you can be arrested for expressing beliefs or opinions that offend someone else.
