Mexico president says illegal immigration to U.S. 'not up to us'

MEXICO CITY (Reuters) - Mexican President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador said on Thursday tackling illegal immigration is an issue chiefly for the United States and Central America to address, as a senior Mexican official called U.S. policy on migration "bipolar."

Speaking after renewed criticism by his U.S. counterpart Donald Trump on Twitter, Lopez Obrador said Mexico would help to check the flow of migrants heading north, but that his country was no longer the main driver of the phenomenon.

Migrants illegally crossing the U.S. border have caused persistent bilateral tension ever since Trump launched his bid for the presidency almost four years ago, saying that Mexico was sending rapists and drug runners into the United States.

With initial campaigning for the 2020 U.S. presidential election already under way, Trump sent out a tweet earlier on Thursday that again attacked Mexico over migration.

"Mexico is doing NOTHING to help stop the flow of illegal immigrants to our Country," Trump tweeted. "They are all talk and no action. Likewise, Honduras, Guatemala and El Salvador have taken our money for years, and do Nothing."

He is betting the US Chamber of Commerce will keep the border open.

However, he's about to learn these invaders ARE his problem when a few million of them pile up in Mexico, and all trade with the US stops.

If POTUS does close the border, the horde of illegals will be Mexico’s problem.

I’ve been on junkets with a couple of hundred people on buses. It’s a big dead coordinate rest stops and food stops and other things.

These “caravans” consist of tens of thousands of people.

Without extensie outside coordination and supplies they would starve to death and get hacked to pieces by the locals before they made it a hundred miles.

Who is coordinating and supplying these “caravans,” and why is he still alive?

I’m looking at you, George.

Yep.

If I were Mexican, I’d be sad that immigrants don’t want to try to come to my country, but just want to pass right through. Guess the Mexicans who think like that are here anyway....

Close the border down to one or two lanes per port and give each traveler a complete inspection down to his skivvies.

Not your problem? It will be when the border closes.
Your economy will collapse quickly too. Closing the border is the only way to attack the problem. Will Trump do it?

Don’t know. It will affect our economy too.

“If they are allowed to cross the Mexican southern border and march through the length of Mexico,it ****** is Mexico’s problem”

THAT is correct.

They know damn good and well what they’re doing. They are fomenting a hispanic invasion of the US so they can increase political power over us by an appeal to other “hispanics” - people they won’t even talk to on a normal day.

If you step back from this and examine it pragmatically, it is easy to see how Mexico would not be worried. For the last 4 decades the Chamber of Commerce has won this fight in both parties. The GOP is too ignorant or simply too afraid of the media to recognize their own pending death through immigration. The DNC views immigration as their golden goose because voters = power and it dovetails nicely with their identity politics meme they use to paint the GOP as “racists.”

The wild card is Trump who seemingly stands along with his diehard supporters. His slogan is “promises made and promises kept.” He has now promised to close down the border if Mexico does not stop the flood.

Who you going to bet on? Until I see different, I am going to go with Trump because he cannot afford to fold on this issue and despite the narrative of the enemedia and the GOPe he recognizes this issue is not only the right thing, it is a political winner. It is one of his biggest applause lines everywhere he goes.

Buckle your seatbelt - the ride is going to get bumpy.

They're right on both counts.

Our national security is up to us - we can't count on neighbors to take care of it for us while we spend billions each year protecting the borders of Western Europe against a Russian invasion that never comes. Mexico is a failed state, but that's their problem - it's up to us to build a border wall and patrol it.

And they're right about our policy being bi-polar - we have a crust of self-proclaimed elites - Democrats and Republicans in politics and business who profit from illegal aliens - Democrats through votes and Republicans through cheap labor. On the other hand, we have most Americans, who oppose foreigners waltzing in illegally.

It is when they allow illegals from the south of their border to enter Mexico on their way to the US.

And illegal drug trafficking plummets.
That will hurt Mexico and the dims.

“Don’t know. It will affect our economy too.”

Who will blink first? The guy who shrugs and says he can do nothing knowing his economy (and possibly government) will collapse or the guy who knows we cannot afford to NOT stop it and it will sting a little?

AMLO has not promised anything close to what Trump just said. Go back and watch Trump talk about Obama and his red-line in Syria. Trump has put down a red-line and we are watching.
