The US has approved the sale of nuclear power technology to Saudi Arabia, the Reuters news agency reported on Thursday. Reuters says US Energy Secretary Rick Perry has allowed companies to sell know-how to the desert kingdom as part of a hoped-for broader deal

Citing a copy of a document it had seen, the global news outlet said US Energy Secretary Rick Perry had granted six secret authorizations to companies to sell the know-how to the desert kingdom as part of a hoped-for broader deal on nuclear power.

Reuters said that the US was looking to build at least two nuclear plants and that Russia and South Korea were also vying for the project. An announcement on the winning bid was to be made later this year, it said.

The US has approved the sale of nuclear power technology to Saudi Arabia, the Reuters news agency reported on Thursday.

Reuters said that the US was looking to build at least two nuclear plants and that Russia and South Korea were also vying for the project. An announcement on the winning bid was to be made later this year, it said.

Quoting a source that declined to be named, the agency said Perry’s approvals enable companies to conduct preliminary work on nuclear power before a deal is signed, but that no equipment that could be used in a nuclear plant would be delivered.

We do, to an extent.

Plant Vogtle in Georgia, the first expansion in nuclear power generation in decades, was beset by 100% cost over runs.

Energy Secretary Rick Perry just approved federal loan guarantees, so that it will come on line.

Hopefully this serves as a prototype, and the cost overruns are reduced as we regain our nuclear stature.

“Why are we giving technology to cavemen with oil?”

Because they are running out and this move ensures we pick up the slack.

First, this is the Isrealis reporting on what they read from the Brits. It reads to me that Perry is allowing U.S. firms to get in the game, which they need Fedgov to grant before they can openly sell their technology.

So, it’s either let the French and Koreans sell without U.S. involvement or let the U.S. be involved. This Perry-bashing (and by connection Trump-bashing) seems like a gross over-reaction to me.

It should also be noted that all this nuke-sharing happened while Obama’s folks were in power so if one must stamp their feet and throw a hissy, they should do so at the administration actually responsible for it. At least Trump pulled back the deal with Iran, thank God.

Don’t like this. If we don’t want those we deem to be the bad guys in the ME to have the technology, nobody should have it. And that includes Israel.

I wouldn’t know how to respond to that. I don’t even know what it meant.

The Russians provided the nuclear reactor to Iran and three more are on order. There is no prohibition on nations acquiring nuclear reactors for peaceful purposes. And the technology has evolved to eliminate the production of plutonium.

The Saudis can get nuclear reactors from France, South Korea, and countries other than Russia. Having lived five years in the Kingdom, the Saudis will obtain the reactors from sources other than Russia. They hate the Iranians and Russia’s working with Iran in Syria disqualifies them for any purchase of a reactor. If the US doesn’t get the contract, someone other than Russia will.

The Saudi Royal family was a target of OBL and AQ. You should read the two fatwas written by OBL.

So what happens when the Royal Family is inevitably overthrown?

Inevitable could be a long time. They have been in power for over 75 years.

The Saudis already have nuclear weapons

The very first line from your link: "Saudi Arabia is not known to have a nuclear weapons program."

Keep reading. Saudi Arabia paid for Pakistan to have a program and gets bombs from them.

I assume the motivating factor is to keep the petrodollar intact.

And to make sure American companies are on the correct side of the income statement.

You have every right to lament about this.

If it were not for our gargantuan budget deficit, now over 22 trillion and rising fast, this may not happen.

Without global trade in real commodities (in particular oil), being settled in US Dollars, King Dollar will have lost preeminence and we will have given up reserve currency status. Then the Dollar will collapse.

For the rest of the story, take a look at Venezuela.

Careful, you’re allowing yourself to be manipulated by anti-Americans whose only card in this game is the “Trump’s insane” card.

Don’t let them do that to you.

I suspect he’s a NY’er who despises the Sauds (terrorists) as well as those who facilitated (read Rats, Bush, etc.) via buttloads of $$$$. Likely was close to and/or knew someone in the 911 Twin Towers attack.

saudi arabia pays for the spread of *slam throughout the world. We should have nothing to do with them.

But there is a special relationship between saudi arabia and this country. Probably due to dependence on oil.

Conclusion: the politicians are willing to pay for the spread of *slam so as to keep the oil coming.

Who is actually using thorium reactors right now to supply power to a grid?

I know of lots of research projects and plans but I don’t know if anyone’s actually putting the technology to work.
