NY Waitresses And Bartenders Wish Amy Schumer Would Butt Out: Go Take Your Min. Wage and shove it

New York State (New York City in particular) can be a really expensive place to live. That’s why it’s particularly tough for many people to make ends meet if they’re earning minimum wage… or even less. That generally only applies to tipped employees like restaurant wait staff and bartenders. But never fear, ladies and gentlemen. There are powerful politicians and famous Hollywood stars out there fighting on your behalf. One of them from the latter category is actress and comedian Amy Schumer. She has connections to powerful politicians (like her Uncle Chuck) and the media alike, and she’s been doing her darndest to get all of those workers a raise to fifteen bucks per hour.
Now, as the New York Times learned this past week, some of those workers have a message for her, but it’s not a thank you note. They’d like her to butt out.
For more than a year, a group of Hollywood actresses waving the banner of the Times Up movement have been pressing Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo to apply New Yorks minimum wage to workers who earn tips, arguing that it would make waitresses less vulnerable to sexual harassment. Among the celebrities weighing in are Sarah Jessica Parker, Michelle Williams, Amy Poehler and Amy Schumer.
Not surprisingly, the restaurant industry is pushing back, saying the proposed change would spell doom for many businesses.
But it has also created an unexpected divide: Waitresses and other servers are resisting the proposal, saying they can make more money from tips and do not need celebrities to help protect them from harassment.
The article has several quotes from actual wait staff they interviewed that are worth a read. One woman who bartends at an Outback Steakhouse told them, “These celebrities have literally no idea. I feel like they need to butt out. Another said that a no-tipping policy (which generally follows a huge wage hike because prices go up) would be ruinous. He currently averages well above $20 per hour in tips, even though his actual “wage” from his employer is a pittance.
We’ve seen this in place after place where these laws have been enacted. Some restaurants experimented with the practice ahead of any government action and found themselves reversing course for as long as possible. And if you think about it, this is a completely logical expectation. If you are the owner of a reasonably successful bar or restaurant that draws a lot of traffic and good clientele, they’re going to generally be ready to leave some generous tips if the service is excellent and the food and/or drinks are enjoyable. That means you’ll be attracting the best wait staff possible because they’ll want to work in an environment like that.
Conversely, no matter how good your establishment may be, if there’s no tipping and you’re offering minimum wage, you’ll be attracting the sort of people who are willing to show up for a minimum wage job. Some of them may be great employees of course, but there’s no incentive to draw the best of the best. And yet here we have the movers and shakers of Hollywood pressuring the Governor of New York to push through a law that paints the wage situation with too broad of a brush. There are, no doubt, many people working at jobs in the Big Apple that don’t earn tips and they would no doubt welcome a nice raise. But when the servers themselves are telling you to butt out, you might want to slow your roll before you “fix” this situation.

Her opinion is that if your co-workers aren’t looking, you can steal their tips.

Has Amy ever waited on tables?
I did, in college, working on the night shift at an iHop.
She should get her nose out of where it has no business being and stick to what passes for comedy.

I worked with a millennial that was all about big raises to the minimum wage. We tried to explain economics to him. He never got it. Eventually, due to his work habits and lack of ethics, he found his minimum wage was zero.

My daughter worked as a bartender (certified) and as a night manager of a small bar and grill (best hamburgers and chicken tenders around). She had also worked for several other small-medium sized bars/grills while going to college.
On a bad night she made about $150 (some of which went to the support staff). On a good night $200-$300 and she earned every bit of it (I would often escort her to her apartment at 3:00 AM for security reasons - before she got her CCP). I saw what she had to do to tally up the bills, clean the bar and tables, floor, etc.
No wonder the hard working waitresses and bartenders don’t what the Hollywood scavengers butting into their work arena.
They know it will only hurt them, not the wealthy leftist fools.

What state ‘certifies’ bartenders? Does certification come with an understanding that you are not to hold a customers glass by the rim but by the base?
To: posterchild
Can’t vouch for the other guy’s state, but I know that Oregon certifies bartenders. They have to receive training on when customers are “overserved” and know when to cut them off, among other things.

There's an article that said a third of NYC residents want to move out of the city.
It's a crying shame how people just don't see the connection between economic ruin and hardship and the policies espoused by left-wing activists and implemented by Democrats.
All of the homeless, crime, and drugs are in Democrat-run cities.

Leftist understanding of economics never exceeds the kindergarten level of "sharing is good, being selfish is bad. And everyone working together will always get more done than any of us working apart!" Nobel prize winning economists of leftist bent use polysyllabic words but say the same thing.
They lack basic understanding of human nature, cause and effect, and their role in economics. "Raise taxes on the rich!" results in the rich moving away. "Pay everyone $15 an hour!" results in less people being able to get jobs and more businesses failing. They scratch their heads and say "it must be because of Trump" because not only do they lack basic understanding of economics, they also lack the facility any level of self evaluation and introspection. Fail, do it again. Fail again, do it again. Fail a third time, blame someone else and do it again. Whole system fails, move somewhere else that's still good and ruin it by, you guessed it, doing what you saw fail over and over before.
Leftism is an emotion based philosophy where they seek to gain satisfaction by being higher minded and more holy than thou. They care not about results, only their sense of superiority. And when your whole philosophy is based on feeling smugly superior you never questions whether things went wrong because of something you did.

Worked with a guy who thought Socialism would be great because we would all be better off.
I asked him if his wife drove a new car to work like he did.
He said yes.
I asked him how much he made.
He said about $45k.
I asked how much she made.
Also about $45k.
I said you and your wife make $90k per year, have two new cars, a house, and you just said you bought a new big screen last week. YOU arent going to be better off under socialism. Theyre going to be taking from you. Compared to the truly poor youre one of the rich.

Bartenders can take a “certified” course re the proper mixing of drinks according to industry standards.
Been a long time ago since my daughter was “certified” re passing this course, but it was an industry (bar/grill, etc) recognized professional training course.
I’ve had several re computer skills/programs and I got a certificate that I passed the course at the end of the training period.

Please do not take this the wrong way. Do they teach the bottle twirling techniques and shaking dice for money for the juke box? I dont drink hard liquor and dont know anything about wine. Im strictly a beer drinker. I was wondering because I used to shake dice with the bartender girls for the juke box, they always picked the songs. I wouldnt know a Manhattan from a margarita but I liked watching the girls shake that thing back in the day. Getting old sucks.
