MINNEAPOLIS — Rep. Ilhan Omar's comments about Israel have consumed Washington. But here in Minnesota’s diverse 5th Congressional District, a pillar of progressivism that handed Omar a decisive victory in November's midterm elections, there has been far less outrage.
In interviews here, including with residents who are Jewish and Muslim, few of Omar's constituents voiced any anger at the lawmaker, even if they found the remarks troubling. One Jewish leader said she would be open to a good-faith foreign policy debate.
To the director of the Dar Al-Farooq Islamic Center, a large mosque 10 miles south of this city, the furor is overblown.
"Anti-Semitism is real in this country," Mohamed Omar, who is not related to the freshman Democrat, said in an interview in a private study, as children nearby hurried to Friday afternoon prayers. But the controversy, he said, is a "distraction."
In the nation’s capital, Ilhan Omar drew an intense backlash for a tweet that suggested American support for Israel was "all about the Benjamins baby" and a remark that pro-Israel activists pushed for "allegiance to a foreign country." She was accused by some lawmakers and prominent Jewish groups of anti-Semitism and playing on toxic anti-Jewish stereotypes.
In response, the House of Representatives last week overwhelmingly approved a resolution condemning all hate, though the measure did not single her out. Omar, for her part, has apologized for suggesting that the United States' connection to Israel is driven by money from AIPAC, a prominent pro-Israel lobby group.
Rabbi Marcia Zimmerman of Temple Israel, a Reform Jewish congregation that is the oldest synagogue in this city, said many of members of her community have called her over the last month to say they were troubled by Omar's comments.

The liberals in metro Minneapolis/St Paul have their pet Somalis and cower every time they pass gas. It's disgusting on both the local government and school board level. They, the white citizens, refuse to stand up to this garbage even though it may soon be past the point of no return. Minneapolis/St Paul will be the new Chicago South Side very soon.

She's probably got a secure seat, like Keith before her. It's a urban district, they mostly vote Democrat, with a population of around 700,000. Per Wiki about 68% White, 17% Black, 6% Asian, 9% Hispanic, 1% Native American. It's said to have a large Jewish population, probably 2% or so. There are only about 45,000 Jews in the entire state. Though as Omar knows, they run it like the other 49. A survey of the Jews and Muslims of the district, but not particularly relevant as the district is majority white and overwhelmingly Christian or non believing. And as a young, urban districk, it will elect a Democrat.
An estimated 70,000 Somalis in her district—many of them immigrants. She could hold a public reading of Mein Kampf and many of her constituents would show up and cheer.
Needless to say, many of the Somalis who support her hold similar world views on Israel and Jews in general. Ms. Omar knows exactly what she’s doing; her virulent anti-semitism plays well at home and in other districts where Democrats are counting on the Islamic vote. She also knows that Nancy Pelosi and other so-called “Democrat leaders” are powerless to stop her.
Hate to say it, but Ms. Omar will be in Congress for a long time, if she chooses. And the days when someone like her would be marginalized/censored by members of her own party are long since gone as well. Omar will be a member of her party’s house leadership within two or three terms.
When this District is redrawn, perhaps the magnitude of the incumbent’s advantage can be adjusted downward such that other candidates may be encouraged to run because they could actually win. You know, just to add diversity.

Clearly the problem is Minnesota.
There are about 45,000 Jews in all of Minnesota. The St. Paul area has around 10,000 with at least another 10,000 in Twin cities suburbs not in CD-5, with the last number growing at the expense of the 5th District. There are also noticeable Jewish numbers in the Duluth area.
CD-5 has a population of 710,000, with more than 40% in white working- and middle-class suburbs.
Omar got 267,000 votes and her margin of victory was 190,000 votes. The Jewish vote was completely irrelevant.
