"Nearly 1,500 pulses of lightning recorded off Southern California coast in 5 minutes
A band of thunderstorms that stretched from southern Kern County past the Channel Islands was producing a dramatic lightning show Tuesday night in the Southern California sky.
In one five-minute stretch alone, shortly after 8 p.m., the National Weather Service recorded 1,489 pulses of lightning off the coast, 231 over Santa Barbara County and 40 in Los Angeles County, said Kathy Hoxsie, a meteorologist with the weather service in Oxnard."

Climate Stains?
Was that the one that hit at like 4 in the morning?
I had a friend whose kids were heading off to a religious retreat and they were up very early packing to head out. She saw the lightning in the west and said something to her husband and he said, *That’s lightning*. She was amazed.
It had been hot that day and we had all the windows open and a couple window fans going in the bedroom so never heard the storm building.
It woke us up when it literally SLAMMED into the house and shook the whole house. It was raining in all the windows from all four sides at once and the kids (who were little) woke up screaming, it scared them so bad.
The power went out almost instantly.
I remember the Labor Day one as well but my recollection was the Aug one was worse.
Global Warming for sure. That number should have only been 1450. /sarc

Bug-zapper thread?
The oddball thing was the next morning we went to our favorite beach at Gaviota and the storm raged a few miles inland behind the mountains.
We had one of the best warmest and mostly sunny days I can ever remember there. Usually it was foggy damp and cold.
Thanks for the news. Interesting. I noticed the tons of lighting on Tuesday night 3/5 around 8pm. The lightening never stopped and just flashed over the ocean for a long time. Very interesting. Never a dull moment in weather news.
It has been non-stop thunder and lightening for the last too evenings.
