Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas is working behind the scenes to boost the prospects of Neomi Rao, one of his former law clerks, to serve on a powerful federal appeals court in Washington speaking privately with at least two Republican senators as she faces a contentious confirmation fight.
Sen. Josh Hawley (Mo.) who publicly questioned how Rao would rule on issues such as abortion before supporting her in a key vote Thursday, disclosed this week that he had called Thomas. The justice has also phoned Sen. Tim Scott (S.C.), a sometimes deciding voice on controversial nominees.
He called me and wanted just to share with me his positive experience and how smart she was, Scott said in an interview Thursday, recalling the conversation he had with Thomas a couple of weeks ago.
Hawley is a member of the Senate Judiciary Committee, which voted 12 to 10 on Thursday to recommend Rao to the full Senate. Scott is not on the panel.

Rat Congresses, under rat Presidents, have had upwards of 50 years to statutorily condone baby murder. The fact that they rely on five lawyers to keep it speaks to their troubled consciences and fear of losing their seats.
An opposition party would call them out.
Will someone please tell me what’s wrong with Tim Scott on some of these nominations. He’s acting like a RAT!
Fake
Of course those looking at her confirmation are going to contact her former justice to ask his/her opinion about the former clerk. That happens all the time.
From Roosevelt to Reagan, the primary consideration for a Supreme Court justice was: Were the a reliable Progressive?
Reagan broke that tradition by nominating Judge Bork. The Progressives went wild, and the term “Borking” was minted.
Since that time, Constitutionalists have been successful in getting five originalists and textualists on the Supreme Court. Some have been disappointing, such as Justice Kennedy.
If President Trump nominates, and has confirmed, one more originalist and textualist to the Supreme Court, we will have the first Constitutionalist Supreme Court in 84 years.
-—and Nixon famously said he nominated Warren Burger because “ he looked like a C.J. should”—
Good for him. He can certainly make his views known in a quite clear manner. RGB has been doing that for years.
Quite right.
But, the President was never supposed to be the primary check on federal courts. The first check on Scotus in the Framers’ Constitution is Congress. But the 17th Amendment neutered the Senate and left behind a runaway Scotus.
I think he’s hyper-sensitive about racial issues.
The SC is 5-4 liberal now. Roberts has dropped the mask, our only hope is RBG being replaced and while pains me to say but I think Thomas needs to retire this year as a preemptive move.
The man is a saint needs to be canonized in 40 years
Interesting - didn't realize Scalia was a progressive.
You got me.
Scalia was nominated a year before Bork.
Justice Thomas is destined to go down as one of the great men of our time. An ultimate testimony to the fact that no one among us really cares what any of the elements of history that impact his current role.
The positive is his movement into the front decision making environment on the edge of the policy action. There have been a few of the great men in the history of the Court who have acted in this role—we are blessed and privileged to have Justice Thomas in our time.

You’re right, Scott has an increasingly bad case of the gone-wobblys.

Thanks, David.
Thank you, Justice Thomas.
President Trump will get at least TWO more SCOTUS Nominations.....
Why this push on Thomas “retiring” since he’s only in his 60’s...it’s not reported that he is in perilous health?
I’ve read he wants to retire to travel with his wife, in their RV! Can you IMAGINE camping next to Clarence Thomas? Wow!
