Parents' sleep doesn't recover for years after having a baby, study finds

New parents know all too well how rare a good night's sleep becomes after a baby arrives. Middle-of-the-night feedings and pre-dawn wake-ups take their toll. Now researchers have calculated just how great a toll it really is.

A recent study, published by Oxford University Press on behalf of the Sleep Research Society, found sleep satisfaction and duration sharply declined with childbirth, reaching the lowest point during the first three months after having a baby. And even six years later, parents' sleep still hadn't fully recovered. Both sleep satisfaction and duration were much lower for new moms than for dads. Women saw an average sleep reduction of 62 minutes a night, compared to men, who got about 13 minutes less sleep, according to the study. Breastfeeding was associated with a slightly greater decrease in moms' sleep satisfaction.

Six years after birth, moms still slept 20 minutes less and dads slept 15 minutes less than before the baby arrived.

My friends mom had 8 kids. She seemed to sleep through the 1980s.

I’ve never fathered a child and I haven’t slept well since around 2000.

CBS is such a sleuth organization.

Here we are in 2019, and they’ve actually discovered what the rest of civilization has known since the dawn of mankind.

What would we do without them?

My mother in law has a nervous personality. A bit hyperactive even in her 50s and 60s.

She was with us the first 6 months for our children. She would be up at the slightest squeak from the crib. She wouldn’t stop no matter what you told her.

I never had my sleep interrupted once....

Maybe they’re letting us know how selfish babies are; demanding our time and using up earth’s resources!

Exactly. After kids, we lose sleep lifelong. And we finally understand our own parents.

Seriously,
The modern structured sleep period is unnatural.

Our natural sleep periods are late night and afternoon.
When there’s less prey.

Haven’t had a good night sleep since the honeymoon. 3 kids later....

No kids, but several delicate pets that can die in 24 hrs if they have health issues I cant get them through. Except when they are sick, I sleep fantastic.
