Democratic Sens. Kamala Harris (Calif.) and Elizabeth Warren (Mass.), who are both running for president, have reportedly said they support reparations for black Americans affected by slavery.
The New York Times reported Thursday that Harris affirmed her support for reparations in a statement after agreeing last week with a radio host that reparations are necessary.
"We have to be honest that people in this country do not start from the same place or have access to the same opportunities," Harris said in the statement. "I’m serious about taking an approach that would change policies and structures and make real investments in black communities."
Warren has also said that she supports reparations, according to the Times, though her campaign declined to provide further details to the newspaper.
The Hill has reached out to both campaigns for comment.
Warren and Harris are both pursuing the Democratic nomination for president in 2020 and the Times noted that previous Democratic presidential candidates have not supported reparations.
Among those who have not backed the policy are former President Obama, 2016 Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton and her Democratic rival that year, Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.), the Times noted. Sanders is running for president again in 2020.

My mother, who is almost 79, her paternal grandfather and grandmother were alive before 1865 (both born around 1859-61). Her father, a WW1 vet, was born in 1897.
I want reparations too. My ancestors were brought to Italy by the Romans, and my Viking ancestors sold my blond blue eyed women ancestors to the Muslims. Is there no justice in this world? I want a piece of the action too. If we can go back 150-200 yrs why not 200 -2000?
And how will they decide who was affected by slavery anyway?
Will they force DNA tests so they can trace everyone’s roots to determine if they descended from slaves and/or plantation owners?
My relatives in WV probably felt like slaves themselves, most being farmers of hilly acres or coal miners. Most had 6 or more kids and struggled to feed them. No one could afford to feed even one slave. Ridiculous.
Anyone truly “affected” by slavery has been dead and buried for many decades. And a fair number of their descendants have been given millions, if not billions of dollars in welfare. Except for political whores, I doubt the majority of hard working slave descendants feel entitled to reparations.
But, just in case it happens, I’m part Irish and American Indian, among other formerly mistreated nationalities; when can I expect MY check?
Okay, first have the Blacks get reparations from the African tribes and muslims responsible for selling them into slavery.................Then allow the families of all the Northern soldiers that died and were maimed freeing the slaves sue the descendants of the slaves for reparations!

My people came from Scandinavia 80 years ago.
My people loooong ago did take English, Scotts, Irish and french as slaves just never blacks.
I understand there are some Hollyweird actors that had slave holders in their ancestry.

Kamala Harris and Elizabeth Warren are both kooks! They are well aware that slavery ended more than 150 years ago. That does not mean anything when they are talking about giving away more of taxpayers money, all to try and buy the black vote.
What Black American of slave (African) decent is not better off in the USA than in some African Country? And as has been said before, Trillions of dollars in social programs is reparations enough. Why should I, as a white man that has zero lineage to slave ownership, be forced to pay someone reparations for something that never happened to them?
I DEMAND reparations because of stinking liberal, slime ball, anti-Christian, anti-Conservative, anti-American, anti-Patriot, hate mongers, high taxing, muzzie loving, French loving, pig stinking dimocrats mess with my life. I demand cash on the barrel head. $100’s and $500’s will do.

I would be willing to make reparations for those affected by slavery if only we can deduct the cost of transporting them over here, the cost of housing, food and clothing. we should also deduct cost welfare and healthcare. Also the cost of the criminal justice system for the investigation, persecuting criminals, and there subsequent prison expense. by the time we finish the people affected by slavery may owe the U.S. a lot money.
How about Repatriation for the actually oppressed today, not the great grandkids of someone.

I guess the IRS will be adding a racial check box to Form 1040. Check “Caucasian” and you get yourself a surtax added. Check “African-American” and get a tax credit?
My great grandfather fought in the Union Army (181st Ohio) during the Civil War to end slavery so do I get any credit for his service?
I want reparations from the Italians / Romans for murdering my Celtic queen, Boudica. I still grieve for her. And I want reparations with INTEREST! That will teach them!
