Interestingly, passenger rail service in the United States has failed because passengers choose to not take it.

Now instead of a Last Mile Problem that occurs with Point A to Point B transport; folks eliminate that with a car: Point A₁ to Point B₁ transport.

Why is it that the libs so love trains?

Not just libs. If done correctly, for instance not having to compete for rail use with non-passenger purposes it's the most convenient way to travel, the first choice of many if it comes anywhere near being available and efficient. (don't believe me: Check out the train station somewhere such as DC and look at all the crowds and all the train routes connecting to locations near and far)

well, it's not only libs. I prefer trains for mid-distance journeys - you can get up and stretch your legs far more than a plane or car and you can snooze, read etc.

That being said they should be competitive and in the US in most cases they are NOT competitive.

correct - private money. The govt projects have project creep and bloat. Private money means that the investors will choose the most feasible routes and project timelines
