So I wont get any mail tomorrow. I will, however, be in my office, like most private sector workers.
Sure, its going to be cold: the current forecast calls for a high temperature tomorrow of 17 below zero, and a low of 33 below. We are in the midst of a three-day stretch in which the temperature never gets to zero. Fahrenheit. And that is in the Minneapolis suburbs.
So it is remarkable that just 13 days ago, the Minneapolis Star Tribune assured us that cold temperatures are a thing of the past, even in northern Minnesota:
We just dont expect temperatures to be below 10 degrees Fahrenheit in Duluth anymore, [Tracy] Twine said.
Heh. Great prediction. Ms Twine is an expert on climate who testified before the Minnesota House Energy and Climate Committee on January 15. I ripped her testimony, which as usual was based entirely on models that are known to be wrong, here. Ms. Twine assured lawmakers that declining snowfalls in northern Minnesota are due to man-made global warming. Only she forgot to check the weather records: snowfall in northern Minnesota is increasing, not decreasing.
And of course, those who said we would no longer be seeing cold weather in Duluth150 miles north of the Twin Cities!failed to foresee the current epic cold snap, which was just days away. Nevertheless, their models, which are programmed to produce politically-desired results, tell us with great confidence what the weather will be like in 100 years. Right. UPDATE: Have all Americans gone soft? No! Twin Cities sportswriter Pat Reusse tweets:
Cold way beyond reason today in northwest Minnesota, but school was held in Warroad and Roseau for most noble of reasons: the Warriors and Rams had a boys hockey game scheduled in Roseau tonight.

Now we know why the Global Warming fanatics changed the name to the catch-all, Climate Change.
Don't get me wrong. I agree with you.
But my first choice pizza place for tonight here in Northern NJ was closed when I drove by this evening. (Currently it's 7 degF going down to zero.) Very unusual.

So Duluth will now become a desert and Saudi Arabia a jungle?
Many postal carriers in cities and towns deliver mail by walking their routes.
In well-below zero temps, that is not safe.
Um.. I'm a private sector worker and have spent my fair share of time outdoors in crap weather.
This guy is an asshat.
Private sector workers work outdoors and I don't think many mailmen work in an office.
Snow shoe Thompson is spinning in his grave.
Those who drive are not in much better circumstance. After all, the trucks are open for easy access.
A fer years ago we didn’t break 0 daytime high for a solid 6 weeks. What did I do? I went to Canada where it was -40 daytime high.
No mail today but UPS delivered packages today.
So is Kasich’s old man
These are a rural mailmans least favorite days. Too many things can and do go wrong, especially when vehicles are involved. I have always missed my job since being retired but this is not one of those times I miss!
And worse, when they do start redelivering you have 2-3 days of mail and pkgs piled up. Hard to fit it all in your car. And people dont clear out around their mailboxes but they are quick to call in and say I drove right by! Those were the days.
UPS doesnt walk a route the last time I checked. Jumping in and out of a heated truck is probably not going to cause frostbite. UPS also drop ships thousands of packages a day at local post offices for last mile delivery by the USPS.
The only time I heard of Post Offices not delivering the mail for cold was when it was too cold for the carrier vehicles (for delivering mail) would’t start. Oh, and of course the Union said you can’t keep the vehicle delivery carriers in, but make the carriers with walking routes go out. Equitable treatment an d all that.
“be in my office
right. so that asshat is inside in a heated office and complains because guys who walk an outdoor mail route in -30 won’t be delivering his junk mail .... and btw, those mail trucks basically can’t be heated because those large back and side doors are constantly being opened and shut at every stop, so those folks aren’t in much better of a situation ...
What ever happened to; Through Rain, Through Snow, Through Sleet, the postal worker shall make his appointed rounds. OK, maybe I don’t have the exact words but its close..
The original motto was meant for IRS tax collectors: "Neither snow nor rain nor heat nor gloom of night stays these couriers from the swift completion of their appointed rounds"
And now you know.
