Ancient climate change triggered warming that lasted thousands of years
Eurekalert ^ | 1/22/19

A rapid rise in temperature on ancient Earth triggered a climate response that may have prolonged the warming for many thousands of years, according to scientists.

Their study, published online in Nature Geoscience, provides new evidence of a climate feedback that could explain the long duration of the Paleocene-Eocene Thermal Maximum (PETM), which is considered the best analogue for modern climate change.

The findings also suggest that climate change today could have long-lasting impacts on global temperature even if humans are able to curb greenhouse gas emissions.

"We found evidence for a feedback that occurs with rapid warming that can release even more carbon dioxide into the atmosphere," said Shelby Lyons, a doctoral student in geosciences at Penn State. "This feedback may have extended the PETM climate event for tens or hundreds of thousands of years. We hypothesize this is also something that could occur in the future."

Oh, wow, thanks, no one has ever asked me that one before.

Uh, it’s probably from Flaming Text, which is (or at least used to be) a handy free online thing to generate logos with or without animation.

There was another site I used for a couple of the ping list logos, I forget why. And I forget the name of that one. :^)

DEAD WRONG?
Sorry, observation incorrect.
At the utmost, perhaps comatose wrong.

Men have been speculating for years and have learned little from their mistakes.
In the meantime, the US is freezing in record temperatures due to “Global Warming”.

It’s passed time to give them ‘the cold shoulder’.

The PETM isn’t a good analogue if you consider CO2 it was four times higher than now. Read Not by Fire but by Ice by Robert Felix

Note that by the student’s own words CO2 is a lagging indicator. That is it warms first then CO2 is released. This CO2 stuff is pretty much nonsense.

Carbon dioxide composes 0.04% of the earths atmosphere. I’m not worried.

Warming from the Little Ice Age would have produced 5-10 ppm rise over the folowing centuries. There is current 2-3 ppm rise per year that fluctuates with the world economy and ocean warmth. So natural warming has a role for sure, but the role is the reverse of what it used to be. The ocean now absorbs less of the "excess" CO2 when it warms and more of it when it cools. The excess is the manmade amount above equlibirium which woould probably be about 300 ppm these days.

Also to have CO2 suddenly rise with the industrial revolution is not just a weird coincidence. The most important thing to remember is that CO2 was the lowest in the history of the planet before we did that. So low that C4 plants evolved to consume low levels more efficiently. The earth is now in a permanent ice age with modest interglacials like the present one; The extra CO2 provides a buffer from return into a full blown glacial period (or even a deadly Little Ice Age).

Finally considering the weather this week, how can anyone say even a little bit of warming (e.g. 2F) wouldn't be welcomed?

Thanks I didn’t realize before I posted that you had posted the chart showing how ridiculously low CO2 really is.

So this genius is saying there may be a positive feedback mechanism built into the climate that in the past as acted to warm the planet and we may be just on the edge of triggering such an event, although the event may happen anyway.

There also is a feedback effect where Professors want dollars. They get dollars from government. Government supplies dollars if the professors instill fear in the populace. Populace supplies dollars to government to protect them from fears.

-60 degrees below zero for the wind chill in Minneapolis.
I lived maybe 10 miles from downtown. My sister lives there. It was in the low 70’s here in southern California. I let my sister know how warm it was here.... : )

Equally, man made CO2 may have absolutely nothing to
do with climate change, and in fact abandoning the use of
so called fossil fuels may make surviving any coming
climate differences impossible.

A Dr. Ned Nikolov is on twitter @nikolovscience

He has published an extensively researched paper asserting that AGW is a discredited theory that cannot be supported by climate research. He is advancing a theory using NASA data that postulates that climate change and earth temperature is a function of air pressure throughout the atmosphere which is affected by solar radiation. Greenhouse effect does not match the data available and CO2 is a beneficial naturally occurring gas.

Let me explain this. If something lasts thousands, tens of thousands or hundreds of thousands of years and without any help from humans, it is NORMAL.

If humanity can not survive normal variations in the earth, we will go extinct, just like thousands of species before us. If "climate change" is real (which is a big IF), the only appropriate solution is to learn to adapt to it.
