Home Depot billionaire co-founder Bernie Marcus said Friday that the growing appeal to socialism in America comes out of the universities.

Marcus, during an interview with Fox News' Neil Cavuto, discussed the deterioration of socialist Venezuela and Cuba, comparing the situations in those countries today with the realities there decades ago, pre-socialist rule. Marcus called the economic downturns in each of those countries, Cuba, in particular, a "perfect example of socialism gone wrong."

"almost 50 percent of students coming out of universities today believe that socialism is the answer. That's frightening to me..." "They [Cuba] took a great country. They put it right down the drain in every way possible," Marcus said. "People are starving to death. Medical [care] is not available for them. And we have a group of people in Washington today, new representatives especially, that look at socialism as the way to go and if you don't think that's dangerous, I do."

Marcus further addressed where he believes the growing socialist sentiment among Americans is coming from.

"It comes right out of the universities. You see students graduating today and a very high percentage...almost 50 percent of students coming out of universities today believe that socialism is the answer," Marcus said. "That's frightening to me because the things that made this country great, that created the wealth of this country, and I mean the wealth of every single person right down the line, the best medical care in the world, the best housing in the world, that's why people want to come here, is because of the system, and that's the free enterprise system."

... ANYTHING outside of a hard science, IT, and maybe business, you’re simply better off just NOT going to college at all.

I absolutely believe this. What fresh-outta-high-school students want is a path into the American Dream and a fun social environment.

I put great hope in loosely organized "colleges" or trade schools that are organized around cool work environments, such as companies like WeWork are creating.

It's crazy to throw away $20- to $50,000 a year when people can gain a wide range of skills and pay a much smaller amount of money for the same experience.

It's an entrepreneurial opportunity waiting to happen.

Higher Education: called such due to the fact it is always more expensive than common sense could permit.

What individual who has paid thru the nose would dream to think “Socialism gone wrong?”

Socialism done right will never be heard. That is an absolute impossibility.
Higher? - most definitely.
Education? - in regard to what?

Universities only continue the lessons taught to children by television and movies. The next step in “continued education”; reinforcing a lesson learned.

Mr. Marcus speaks to a fraction of the problem.

The big lie is that “everybody needs a college education.” When Obama pushed that, in the back of his mind his thinking was “higher education is a great indoctrination camp on the path to socialism”.

I say, drastically cut the total amount a student can borrow on Uncle Sam’s dime. When that happens, overnight you’ll suddenly see college education getting more affordable.

And practical college education curricula will come to the fore instead of Feminist Studies, LGBT Studies, and other nonsense.

And start loaning money for trade schools and other education. Why do the geeks and upper echelon good students get most of the breaks?

We’ve got a long way to go. Trump is caught up in basic stuff today: law and order, the borders, voter fraud. Sooner or later he’ll be able to divert his attention to the broken education system. But first things first!

I like your commentary very much, adorno. Thank you.

You may have read Frederic Bastiat's famous pamphlet The Law written before and after the French Revolution of 1848.

A translation for French was done by The Foundation for Economic Education. The linked Word version of this above is my own edited version using the Foundation's translation as my starting point.

I spent several hours trimming down The Law to its best and most relevant passages, for example, cutting out his discussion of Universal Sufferage because the parallels to today's society are not as clear.

The genius of Bastiat is he explains the natural, righteous, and God-given origins of the Law and shows how Socialism and "Legal Plunder" corrupts the Law, thereby detroying man's freedom and civil society.

The biggest attraction of Bastiat's The Law is that it is a text powerful and simple enough for the everyday layman to follow.

#165 The Canoga Park, CA store has them along the short street (Deering ave) that leads to Home Depot.

Here they are. Rotate the view and you will see a dozen:
