~The FReeper Canteen Presents~

Road Trip: Dyess Air Force Base, Texas

dyess3

Dyess Air Force Base (AFB) is a United States Air Force base located approximately 7 miles southwest of Abilene, Texas.

The host unit at Dyess is the 7th Bomb Wing (7 BW) assigned to the Global Strike Command Eighth Air Force. The 7 BW is one of only two B-1B Lancer strategic bomber wings in the United States Air Force, the other being the 28th Bomb Wing at Ellsworth Air Force Base, South Dakota.

The base is located in the southwest corner of Abilene, TX and is about 200 miles west of Dallas. The base employs more than 5,000 people, making it the single largest employer in the area. Dyess AFB has nearly 200 facilities on base, plus 988 units of family housing, and encompasses 6,117 acres of land. The base has a total economic impact of nearly $310 million yearly on the local community.

The base is named after Lt Col William Edwin Dyess, a native of Albany, Texas, who was captured by the Japanese on Bataan in April 1942. Dyess escaped in April 1943 and fought with guerilla forces on Mindanao until evacuated by submarine in July 1943. During retraining in the United States, his P-38 Lightning caught fire in flight on 23 December 1943 near Burbank, CA. He refused to bail out over a populated area and died in the crash of his P-38 in a vacant lot.

The 7th Bomb Wing and 317th Airlift Group were called to duty shortly after 11 September 2001. Both played and continue to play vital roles in both Operation Enduring Freedom and Operation Iraqi Freedom. Many of the 7th BW's B-1s and support personnel deploy to Southwest Asia.

From there the 7 BW provides close air support to troops in the field and precision strike missions with the B-1B Lancer. The 317th Airlift Group has been deployed continuously to Southwest Asia since December 2003 where the group provides airlift support to OIF, OEF and Combined Joint Task Force-Horn of Africa operations.

On 1 October 2015, Dyess became part of Global Strike Command.

Howdy, E.G.C. ((HUGZ))

Did Gizmo find more birds to chase and run your legs off trying to keep up? :-)

((LOL))Well, it got a little windy and I had to push the pickup door open so it wouldn't catch my foot.

In the process I lost the pickup and house key set (Don't worry, I have a spare attached to my wallet and another in the glove compartment.) I did find the lost set on the ground right before we got back in the pickup and left.

Gizmo did find a sack of food on the ground. He also was chasing geese. We had fun out there yesterday.

Whew! Good that you were able to find the keys and that no one else found them first.

Sounds like Gizmo had a good time giving his nose and his legs a workout. :-)

EEUUWW! I never even liked fresh AVON, much less ancient. Some of the bottles might be worth something to collectors, though.

I’m ready for a bit of winter before spring. We haven’t had it yet and after spring comes oven, so.....

Perspective. Everything. LOL!

See ya tomorrow night for another fun quiz!

We aren’t even going to bother trying to sell any of that junk. What will burn goes into a bonfire and what won’t gets hauled off.

Hubby’s aunt was an Avon representative for a while and had tons of the junk - - and being a hoarder, she kept most of it! It’s everywhere! We’ve tossed a ton of it already over the years and we still run across more. There was an old car in the barn several years ago and the trunk was full o boxes of that stuff! It would be funny if it didn’t make us stink so bad having to handle it. LOL! Plus it wreaks havoc on our sinuses. I’m still sneezing.

I’d gladly let you have our winter if I could! Three seasons in the year would be fine and dandy. :-)

I reckon I’ll be late again tomorrow night. There is SO much to be hauled out of that house so we can sell it and it’s going to take a while. If the folks interested in buying it decide to go for it, we have to have it ready quickly. But I’ll see ya for the quiz at some point.

...it's still morning.
I did sleep pretty late.
It felt good!
Hubby brought me a
Sausage, egg and cheese biscuit for breakfast.
Which means I skip lunch! LOL!
It's a warm 56 and sunny here.
Sorry some of y'all are in the deep freeze.
It's supposed to get colder tonight.
Not horrible, but at least a BIT of winter!
Y'all have a Terrific Tuesday...
...and don't work TOO hard!
((((hugs))))
