Theresa May has sustained the heaviest parliamentary defeat of any British prime minister in the democratic era after MPs rejected her Brexit deal by a resounding majority of 230.
Brexit-supporting Conservatives joined with opposition parties and the Democratic Unionist party to trounce the government in the meaningful vote, which the prime minister delayed before Christmas in the vain hope of winning over waverers.

I think you are right.
when i was there this past june people in pubs did not generally seem to want to talk about brexit (or anything else political for that matter).
for those able to pop in, has the pub scene changed any since then? and if so, what are people saying? just wondering...
I was anti-Thersea May BEFORE it was cool. I remember saying replacing Cameron with her was utterly pointless and an awful decision.
Numerous FReepers said at the time that the fact she was PERSONALLY against Brexit didn't matter, she had promised to follow the will of the voters and enact Brexit if that is their wish, blah blah blah...
Overall, I'd rate this twit an even bigger failure than Merkel. And yes, May should have stepped down earlier, and the Conservative Party should have had the balls to vote "No Confidence" in her government before this debacle. If they have to hold an election now, it increases the chances of a disastrous Jeremy Cobryn victory.
Well, look on the bright side. If Corbyn becomes PM, he’ll get to make it official that the language of the UK is Arabic & Pakistani and the official “religion” is Mohammadanism.
Happens all the time in the USA. The majority of citizens vote down gay marriage. Some activist federal judges decide otherwise. The majority of citizens vote to cut off benefits for illegal aliens. Some activist federal judges decide otherwise.
And the bizarre thing is numerous FReepers keep insisting that we're "in danger" of becoming a direct democracy where the majority can do whatever they want by simply getting 51% of citizens to agree. I'd say we're "in danger" of getting the opposite. The people's votes don't matter anymore.
There will be no civil war. As soon as "protests" get deadly, out come the black mask agents with the guns.
May suffered defections both from hard core remainder Tories and hard-core leaver Tories for different reasons. NO ONE likes the deal (other than the EU itself which imposed it).
May sucks but she tried to follow the result of the referendum. She may not deserve praise and she should step down but she doesn’t deserve the “Paul Ryan” everything is her fault treatment.
Hard core remainder scum in the Conservative party are more deserving of our ire, them as this pond scum Speaker who is about as impartial as a Russian judge at the Olympics. I probably would have voted for the deal cause the alternative of uncertainty sounds worse.
I don’t know what will happen or what the best solution is. Go ahead with Hard Brexit? As I understand that will happen automatically if they do nothing. Frankly Parliament shouldn’t have gotten a vote on the deal.
If there is a 2nd referendum remain would win.
yeah do most here just LIKE to read pessimism where there is none?
and make up their own facts and conclusions?
this is good news.
HER brexit deal is done
not Brexit
I was in NZ 6 weeks ago...
Talked to some long time personal associates...
was looking forward to some lamb...didn’t even get offered mutton...
Nobody was planning to have the much loved lamb dinner this year...
and if you do know someone in lamb, remind him that its better and cheaper to raise sheep for food than beef,,,shorter gestation period less fat etc
Note: I love beef...
Years ago NZ used to send a lot of lamb to England...
But not so much that it affected the price for households back home...
Now however a huge amount of lamb is sent to Europe...due to the EU trade agreements in England...
and so the NZers get $28 a pound for what was once the cheapest meat and 4 times a week staple and from whence the supply comes !!!
Thank you
I'm no Paul Ryan fan, but between him and May, she is significantly to his left. I don't recall Paul Ryan ever making a national address to heap praise on a Muslim holiday and say how enriched America is by its Muslim community, or express dismay and outrage that an american protectorate won't pass gay marriage, as "Conservative" Theresa May does. Replacing May with a British version of Paul Ryan (probably that goofball CINO Boris Johnson is a good example) would actually be an upgrade in this case.
“No, Brexit will now happen automatically and whatever adjustments need to be made will be made over time after Brexit.”

Actually, that may be more desirable in the long run. It takes awhile to get into such stuff and it’ll take some undoing to get out of it without stains. But at least they’re headed in the right direction.
I don’t much care one way or the other, but the impression I had when the initial vote was taken, was that very few people understood the implications or had formed an opinion and therefore did not vote. I suspect this will move toward a revote, which will certainly attract a much more informed and opinioned vote.
I wasn’t comparing them ideologically. Ryan was practically treated like Hitler by some freepers. I was comparing him to May in that sense.
May dished up the crap sandwich and so it will be her fault if Corbyn takes over in the end.
Donald Trump warned that this was a bad deal which would hurt the chances for a US-UK trade agreement.
The British PM went ahead with it anyway.

She is a Bremainer and a swamp politician. Her job is to hijack and eviscerate the Brexit.
Unfortunately the rich (British) families that own the fishing rights and quotas sold them off to foreigners. It was an own goal and nothing to do with the EU.
Britain sold our fish quotas for a quick buck, says PETER HILL
exactly! The ‘remainer’s’ wanted to make compromises, those who want to leave the EU want out and can deal with the problems after they leave.
Legally, yes. Politically, no.
