Volkswagen is investing $800 million in its plant in Chattanooga, Tennessee, a move that will add 1,000 jobs to the factory, the company announced Monday. It plans to build electric cars there.
Volkswagen's investment in Tennessee comes weeks after General Motors announced plans to close three North American plants and shift its production focus away from sedans, to free up money to develop to electric and self-driving vehicles.
The move also comes amid talks between Volkswagen and Ford about pooling resources to make the next generation of vehicles.
The new Tennessee jobs and production should begin in 2022, according to the company's statement.
"The US is one of the most important locations for us and producing electric cars in Chattanooga is a key part of our growth strategy in North America," said VW CEO Herbert Diess.

Volkswagen is among the world's largest automakers. The company reported record sales of 10.8 million vehicles last year. But only about 1% of those sales were electric cars.
Volkswagen and other leading automakers are scrambling to boost production of electric and self-driving cars, which they believe are the future of the industry.

I've seen home-built kit cars with better build quality (evenness of body seams, etc) than most of the Teslas I've checked out. That's why I know they don't do "car" as well as most of their competitors.
I do not share your belief in your powers of prediction.

The head of Ford teased that there ware big things coming in 2019 (I think, otherwise it was 2020 -- probably AI in vehicles).
But nobody can predict when it will happen because there many unknowns such as new and advancing technology, govt subsidies and carbon taxes, future price increases of fossil fuels.

I doubt Exxon agrees that electric cars will replace the internal combustion engine.
I can give you many reasons why electric cars will not “replace” ICE vehicles:
1) Weather. In Arizona car batteries need to be replaced about every year because they literally cook. In colder states the charge does not last as long and Lord help you if you are running a heater or air conditioner while driving over hills.
2) Range. This is self explanatory and the issue will not go away.
3) Power. There is no working battery powered equivalent of an F150 towing a trailer.
4. Electrical infrastructure. The US power grid is unable to handle the power requirements of charging all of the electric cars if even 1/2 of the fleet was electric. It’s not just a matter of energy production, it is a matter of electrical transmission.

They say that world gasoline usage will peak in 2030 and begin to fall, and by 2040, 40% of cars and light duty trucks worldwide will be electric.
Exxon has to publish that report for their stockholders.

I do not give the “Outlook” crest for any more predictive powers of 20 years from now than I for you. My prediction: they will be larger than .2% of the global fleet. Far, far less than 50% of the global fleet. And distortion of the free market by use of government policies will be responsible for a good part of that growth. More, the reason for this government intervention, Global Warming/AGW/ACC will still not have occurred.

I doubt your powers of prediction. For you or that article to “lie” would be to say something untrue. You and the article are dealing in fortune telling. Truth and lies have nothing to do with it.

This plant will probably be set up like the Tesla battery factory in Nevada where Panasonic makes the batteries and Tesla assembles the battery packs.
