~ The FReeper Canteen Presents ~

~ Pearl Harbor, December 7, 1941 ~

On Sunday, December 7th, 1941 the Japanese launched a surprise attack against the U.S. Forces stationed at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii. By planning his attack on a Sunday, the Japanese commander Admiral Nagumo, hoped to catch the entire fleet in port. As luck would have it, the Aircraft Carriers and one of the Battleships were not in port. (The USS Enterprise was returning from Wake Island, where it had just delivered some aircraft. The USS Lexington was ferrying aircraft to Midway, and the USS Saratoga and USS Colorado were undergoing repairs in the United States.) In spite of the latest intelligence reports about the missing aircraft carriers (his most important targets), Admiral Nagumo decided to continue the attack with his force of six carriers and 423 aircraft. At a range of 230 miles north of Oahu, he launched the first wave of a two-wave attack. Beginning at 0600 hours his first wave consisted of 183 fighters and torpedo bombers which struck at the fleet in Pearl Harbor and the airfields in Hickam, Kaneohe and Ewa. The second strike, launched at 0715 hours, consisted of 167 aircraft, which again struck at the same targets. At 0753 hours the first wave consisting of 40 Nakajima B5N2 "Kate" torpedo bombers, 51 Aichi D3A1 "Val" dive bombers, 50 high altitude bombers and 43 Zeros struck airfields and Pearl Harbor. Within the next hour, the second wave arrived and continued the attack.

I think everyone’s heart went out to him and many got teary-eyed. I sure did.

Dang, if it’s windy there, it’ll be here soon. As I recall, the system that’s coming through here this weekend is coming up from your area. The way they were showing it, we’ll have a nasty wintry mix here. Not looking forward to it AT ALL.

Your 47 sounds kinda nice at the moment. It’s 25 now and with clear skies, it’ll drop lower before the sun comes up tomorrow.

I remember it like it was yesterday-——strange the things that stay in our minds-—I even remember the room we were in and where the radio was located——we were at an aunt’s house for Sunday dinner.

Good evening, xrmusn...Pearl Harbor does seem to have started the slippery slope to Hiroshima/Nagasaki.

On Friday, we’re supposed to have a high of only 39 with “freezing rain”. I wouldn’t mind some rain, but no freezing stuff, please. So I guess you get it after we do. Not good at all!

The first American aviator to face a Japanese fighter face-to-face that morning ...was an aviatrix.

Cornelia Fort was a flight instructor on Oahu and that Sunday morning she happened to be giving a flying lesson. They were doing touch-and-go's on an airstrip near Pearl and she had to take the controls away from the student to avoid a mid-air with a Zero that was making an emergency landing on the same strip, believed to be have been just coming off the first attack run on the fleet.

Fort was an heiress, her father the founder of the National Life and Accident Insurance Company, a long-time sponsor of the Grand Old Opry, and whose name you will have heard mentioned if you've listened to the Opry radio show. The Cornelia Fort air park, located next to the grounds of the present-day Opryland complex, was named in her honor (although most passers-by assume it's the site of some old fort named after a guy called Cornelia).

Fort was bigger, stronger, faster and smarter than most of the other kids and she grew up more tomboy than debutante. As a child in the 1920s she witnessed her father forcing her older brother to take an oath never to fly in an airplane but he never dreamt he would need to have his daughter take the same pledge.

When war ensued Fort joined the Womans Auxiliary Ferry Service (WAFS). She was killed in 1943 in the crash following a mid-air collision with an Army Air Corps pilot who was attempting to impress her with his flying prowess while they were participating in a formation flight to Love Field in Dallas.

Fort was only 24 years of age at her death and already had logged more than 1100 hours of flight time. She was the first of the 38 WAFS who would give their lives in the service of their country in aviation mishaps before the war was over.

Yeah, it’s coming here Sat. and Sun. From what I saw, we’ll get rain, sleet, maybe some snow, and back and forth with all that mess for two days. Not looking forward to it.

Freezing rain can be rough if it builds up on trees and power lines. Do NOT like ice storms. I hope it doesn’t get that bad there!

I do too. We’ve had some doozies in the past and I’d really not like to repeat them. We had one a couple of winters ago that broke nearly every tree in town. We only lost one tiny branch...I think because we had watered our trees and they weren’t brittle.

Plus, the kitties will be soooo cold. I think I remember my MIL having a heavy throw that is too ugly to use here in the house, but it might be a good addition to their bedding in the shed if it really gets ugly.

Hope you get all your running done before it hits there so you don’t have to be out in it. Maybe it’ll pass quickly or go north of you there.

The worst one here hit the night before Christmas Eve in ‘98 and it sounded like a war zone that night - transformers blowing and trees crashing. Boom, boom, boom. The section of town I lived in at the time had no power for five days but some areas went up to three weeks without it. Not a good Christmas that year.

Your poor kitties aren’t going to be happy at all. :-(

I’ll be SURE to have everything dealt with so I don’t have to go anywhere this weekend, you can bank on that! LOL!

Egad! That had to be a nightmare! I can’t imagine the power being off for 5 days, much less 3 weeks!, during the coldest days in winter. Hope you had lots of blankets and quilts! And I hope you don’t have a repeat of that. Your poor trees have been through enough for one year!

Snowy and cold here. 200 Elk a mile west of me in the subdivision and 4oo to the east on a private ranch. My kind of invasion.
My mother was born December 7 99 years ago. I have a cousin entombed in the Arizona. We are losing the last of the greatest generation, kind of a change of the guard.
