EX-NBA Player Eric Murdock Accuses White United Airlines Flight Attendant of Race-Baiting
Newsweek ^ | December 4, 2018 | Dan Cancian

A former NBA player has filed a lawsuit against United Airlines for $10 million, accusing a flight attendant of “race-baiting.”

According to the lawsuit filed in New York Eastern District Court, the incident unfolded on July 13 on United Airlines Flight 1537 from Las Vegas to Newark Airport in New Jersey.

Murdock, who is black, asked a flight attendant whether he could move to an empty emergency exit row behind him to sit alongside his son, who was seated in a different row.

According to court documents, the stewardess, a white woman, told Murdock the seats he was looking to move to cost a premium price, although she did not specify how much.

Because I am 6’5”, I usually pay the extra price to sit in an exit row or some other row with extra room. It can run from $60-$80 for the extra room seats (double that if my wife accompanies me). That’s why it is irksome to me if someone simply moves to such a seat if the plane is not full. It is not fair the people like me who (over)paid extra for the seat.

These days, it’s best to assume that the ‘dark skin’ person bitching about racism is wrong and simply trying to stir up trouble.

But if the seats were empty and they weren’t sold, assigned or “given” to someone else there should not have been an issue.

If there is an empty seat in first or business class and someone purchased an economy ticket, I don't know of any airline that would allow that customer to upgrade-move their seat for free.

I don’t agree with this pricing plan. Never have. Although there is more room in the exit aisle(s), the seats do not recline.

That should be enough to maintain the price point, not charge extras.

Is this an adult son? Because I don’t believe someone under 18 is allowed to sit in the exit row.

i’m 6 ft 5 in

Would show my FD id and ask for emergency exit seat because had more room
That’s before airlines began to charge extra for such seats

On flight from Seattle to Newark the flight attendant asked if wanted to sit on empty emergency exit seat ...

Exactly. 6’4” / 240 here. I have status with Delta after 2 million miles and lots of global travel, so exit row is a gimmee if available. Economy comfort is the next best seat leg room wise, and Even.I.Have.To.Pay. for that to guarantee it, unless the seat(s) is open and I get a courtesy upgrade, but that is shown on the pre-boarding displays EVERY TIME.

Let’s suppose this guy saw an empty first class seat and decided to opt for it cuz he is tall. Nope. Ain’t happening.

Why should he just be able to take a seat that’s a charge item for all others?

The GATE AGENT could do it, presuming he had the open seat and the guy was a pleasant requester. Or a strict policy might be in place, and even the gate agent has to say no. The FA might have a memo in her email that states strictly NO upgrades without paying or status. Should she bust policy? Don’t think so.

FINALLY. The guy’s son is in exit row and would not pop for the upgrade fee (likely he’s there due to status with United or he paid)? dude ... it’s your DAD!! I *NEVER* occupy a ‘special’ seat when traveling with family unless they are in a similar grade seat. Wanna pi$$ off your spouse? Take the First Class upgrade while your wife steams in coach ...

I think the age varies by airline, but yeah, probably an ADULT son. Dude, *PAY* the upgrade for your Dad!!!

My niece flew here for Thanksgiving and she enlightened me to the fact that you do have to pay different prices for different seats. I have not flown in awhile. I was shocked. 😡

Hmm, a Delta white attendant wouldn’t let me, a whitey, sit with my white child on a privately chartered flight. Then a Hispanic attendant tossed white tp down the aisle as a game.

Is it even remotely possible that a black person and a white person can have a disagreement or argument that isn’t racist on the part of the white person?

Rhetorical question. Of course not. It is racist to even disagree with a black person now.
