Rush is rightly disgusted at today's Mueller's news. SO disgusted in fact that after a caller prompted him he agreed that the word "conservative" is so useless and damaged that a "rebranding" might be a good idea.
I couldn't agree more.
I consider myself a Classical LIberal, which in many cases is considered conservative. I am for freedom of the individual, I believe that certain rights are God-given rights, i.e. natural rights. I belive in limited government federal government, a stronger state and local government. I do believe in the Constitution as written.
I believe that the natural tendancy of man/government is to gravitate toward totalitarianism. I belive that those tendancies need to be tempered. I find fault with both the “Left”, as well as the “Right.” It is a constant Yin-Yang sort of thing that needs to be kept in balance to a peaceful center. Currently the pendulum needs to swing toward the right to combat the excesses of the left, but there will be a time that that pendulum will have to swing back a bit to find the center.
I advocate for the new party name to be called Common Sense, after Mr. Paine.
Im certain readers of the National Review wouldnt want to have a beer with me, and vice versa.
I am an American.
There’s another point, a subtextual point if you will, in that some people are repelled by the word conservative. Some people like to think progressively, accept new ideas, embrace progress at least in some areas. The word conservative doesn’t fit.
Much in the same way that President’s use the word “strict constructionists” or “literalists” when it comes to appointing judges.
I identified in high school history class with the anti-federalists. I instinctively understood the unwieldiness of large, distant centralized bureaucracies and their tendency towards uniformity and the lowest common denominator. All progress is marked by individuals who strike out from the orthodoxy.
Finding a replacement word may be difficult. Anti-federalist, individualist, freedom, liberty... or I think it was Walter Williams who said 15+ years ago that we should take back the word Liberal.
Pelham, a famous politician once ran a campaign on change. If you want to keep defending redefinition and change, you can have it. And enjoy the rabbit hole. Just be aware youre dragging the rest of us with you.
I think of a straight line.
On the far left end is despotism, totalitarianism.
At the far right is freaking anarchy, an everything goes, every man for himself cluster foxtrot.
For me, conservatism when properly done, lies right in the middle with a reliance on personal responsibility and the least amount of government needed to carry out its Constitutional duties.
That language changes isn’t due to politics despite your apparent fixation on that idea.
It’s simple cultural history.
The dialect here in California is a mish-mash of pocho Spanish, surfer slang, Valley Girl vocal fry, Hollywood, and occasionally even some standard English.
No one is controlling this, it’s organic. Popular usage determines what wins out. People who study language, people who do translations, are well aware of this process.
“I identified in high school history class with the anti-federalists.”
Articles of Confederation, baby. George Mason and Patrick Henry rule. Although IIRC Henry converted to the dark side before he died.
Some of their dire predictions came true. But I don’t know if an Articles governed nation could have survived. The serious financial problems it suffered from were only solved by Alexander Hamilton using the taxing power granted by the Constitution.
I have always loathed the term... that said, I vote my pocketbook. I’ve always been a very pragmatic right Libertarian.
And thus, common sense!
I was listening in the car today and heard a caller named Geno rip Rush a new one over this stupid idea.
Rush lost a chicken parm dinner for being stupid.
How about Rational?
Yes.
I like free thinking patriot.
Just for the record, if langage changes over time, would you also say laws change their meaning from one generation to the next?
I am just a Normal American.
Today’s Mueller’s news is what?
Pity kids don’t get a Classical education anymore. Aristotle’s Golden Mean has a lotta applications.
Well back in the day, a Liberal Arts degree meant teachings in a variety of topics, not necessarily mastering any, but a broad based knowledge. One could then focus on a particular avenue afterwards.
“would you also say laws change their meaning from one generation to the next?”
Judges and politicians are famous for ignoring original intent. That’s the art of sophistry. If there’s no one to force them to adhere to what a law was intended to do then they ignore it or twist it into doing something else.
Sobran or Francis quipped that we rarely let the Constitution interfere with what we want to do. By “we” he meant government officials of all branches. Read the 9th and 10th Amendments. They must have meant something when they were adopted in the Bill of Rights. But today they are essentially a dead letter.
Or look at the 14th Amendment. The debate in Congress makes clear that it was intended to insure citizenship for former slaves. Now it’s being used create anchor babies for illegal aliens and foreign nationals here on visitor visas. Where did that come from? Some judge simply added the idea to an unrelated decision and it now has a life of its own.
Christian. Conservative. Male. No equivocation . No fucking bullshit!!!!
The satan followers manipulate the language to hide true meaning and to deceive and manipulate.
Baby killing = Abortion
Illegal aliens = immigrants
Weather = Global warming= climate change
Nationalism = white nationalism = white supremacy
Conservatism = right = far right = alt. right = NAZI
Same sex attraction = homosexual =bisexual = transexual= gender fluid
I’m sure all of us could add to this list if we give it 5 minutes thought. We view satan as some ugly monster. In reality he is a fallen angel named Lucifer. Lucifer means light. Lucifer tempts us into evil he doesn’t scare us into it. Lucifer resides in the twisting of language to make evil appear good. When we pervert words rather than speak truthfully and clearly we are succumbing to his techniques and lowering ourselves to his level. You don’t sugar coat the truth to make it palletable to the non believer or the evil ones. You believe in the Lord, you read his scripture, you obey his laws. You do not pervert his word to gain acceptance of the world. the world is satan’s kingdom.
