John Allen Chau was killed last week by North Sentinel islanders who apparently shot him with arrows and then buried his body on the beach, police say.
But even officials don't travel to North Sentinel, where people live as their ancestors did thousands of years ago, and where outsiders are seen with suspicion and attacked.
"It's a difficult proposition," said Dependera Pathak, director-general of police on India's Andaman and Nicobar Islands, where North Sentinel is located.
"We have to see what is possible, taking utmost care of the sensitivity of the group and the legal requirements." ..."
Police are consulting anthropologists, tribal welfare experts and scholars to figure out a way to recover the body, he said.
While visits to the island are heavily restricted, Chau paid fishermen last week to take him near North Sentinel, using a kayak to paddle to shore and bringing gifts including a football and fish. ..."
he wrote about his visit and left his notes with the fishermen. He returned to North Sentinel the next day, Nov. 16.
What happened then isn't known, but on the morning of the following day, the fishermen watched from the boat as tribesmen dragged Chau's body along the beach and buried his remains. ..."
Chau was apparently shot and killed by arrows, but the cause of death can't be confirmed until his body is recovered, Pathak said. ..."
"He didn't go there for just adventure. I have no question it was to bring the gospel of Jesus to them," Staver said.
Staver said Chau's last notes to his family on Nov. 16 told them that they might think he was crazy but that he felt it was worth it and asked that they not be angry if he was killed.

Not sure how well that would work with some of us Marines.
:)
Island of murderers. How quaint.
Such attempts have never worked before?
when you stick your neck out like that sometimes it gets chopped off. No one invited him and he took a chance. The missionary zeal is not welcome everywhere.
Send Hillary. She’s good at telling people they are bad and stupid and should just listen to her.
Maybe they’re just mad because they didn’t get the free stuff promised them by Broward County after they all voted for Nelson.
“the first step in presenting the Gospel to them.”
It would also be the first step in presenting a host of lethal viruses and diseases that the Andamans have no resistance to, hardly a Christian thing to do.
Killing Chau was a self defense to the biological attack from any foreigner.
defending their territory and way of life from meddling outsiders is not murder.
Heh... I'm glad you're here.
He broke the law, got himself killed for nothing and now others who try to retrieve his body are endangered. Yeah he’s a real winner.
Maybe we could hire the islanders and put them along the border with Mexico.
Be that as it may, the introduction of foreign people is undesriable and they should be left alone.
I dont think they see it as interfering with their way of life....nice editorializing by the writer
They simply kill strangers
Fear
You argue Christianity civilized Europe, but we are talking about what raised the West out of the darkness.
The founders, of course, fled Europe for religious freedom. You argue the "others" in your original premise were individuals. From a causal perspective, would it not be better to argue, as I would, the "others" were the founders/early Americans and thus it was the West that drew itself up out of the darkness?
One wonders how Christianity would appear today had "it" not torn away from the Crown.
One can also wonder how "it" will appear tomorrow as the U.S. increasingly dismisses the Church. As a wandering Episcopalian, I can see the evil and am sad for the Church.
Thanks for the link, 4yearlurker, I will check it out.
Island of murderers. How quaint.@
An island of warriors willing to defend their homelands from Illegal immigrants.
“He died for his love for them.”
He didn’t know them, he hadn’t met them, until they killed him. He didn’t die for the love of them. He died for the love of his fantasy of being the one to bring a primitive group of strangers to Jesus and civilization. He disrespected them by entering their isolation and they sent him to Jesus. Lord bless his soul and may he rest in peace.
The beach is always at the edge of the island. Can't be central.
There was a report from the 19th c shipwreck on N.S. island that the natives attacked the survivors with iron-tipped arrows, which was curious, but apparently they repurposed materials from earlier wrecks and flotsam and jetsam. They grow coconuts (this is seen from drone vids, which also reveals the primitive traditional hut construction, paths and clearings). Tribesmen from another island who are believed to be related (same basic kit) have been tried as translators, but the languages are mutually unintelligible (this isn't uncommon even among related agglutinative languages), physiologically they appear to be closely related. The Boxing Day quake of 2004 caused uplift, joining the main island with a small islet nearby, and sort of tipping the whole works to reveal a broad new expanse of coastline on one side. The next major tsunami will probably take care of the low-lying areas where most or all of the population is believed to live.
BS
He died trying to make a name for himself and write a book and be paid to be on TV. That is the true extent of his altruism
