"Suspicious Minds": Trump accused of racism for honoring Elvis, as he awards Medal of Freedom

Not everyone believes Elvis is the king.

President Trump will award the Presidential Medal of Freedom to seven Americans on Friday, including the late rock star Elvis Presley, though even that gesture is coming under fire from liberals.

Trump is honoring Presley, baseball legend Babe Ruth, former Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia, philanthropist Miriam Adelson, Utah Sen. Orrin Hatch, jurist Alan Page, and Hall-of-Fame quarterback Roger Staubach.

Still, some have accused Trump of racism for honoring Presley, long known as the "King of Rock and Roll."

The Washington Post’s pop culture critic Chris Richards called Trump’s move “a little nod to the good old days, back when black visionaries could invent rock-and-roll, but only a white man could become the king.”

“Yes, Trump is sending a message here,” Richards wrote That claim has been scoffed at online, with the Weekly Standard publishing a rebuttal titled, “Elvis Wasn’t Racist. Neither Is Giving Him the Presidential Medal of Freedom.”

“If you’re invested in making Elvis an avatar for racial resentments more than 40 years after his death, you’re, perhaps unwittingly, making the problems of contemporary divisions worse,” columnist Mark Hemingway wrote. “Music is one of a precious few cultural forces still holding us together.”

Liberals have also protested Trump’s award for Adelson, the wife of GOP megadonor Sheldon Adelson. The New York Times columnist Paul Krugman called the award to Adelson “ludicrous” and an “insult to people who received the medal for genuine service.” Krugman said she’s “done nothing for her country besides being the wife of a Trump-friendly megadonor.”

Krugman is obviously an anti-Semite. (See how that works. If We can’t criticize Soros, Krugman can’t criticize Adelson.)

Oh, like other Nobel Peace Prize were insulted when the award was bestowed on Barry for what? Getting elected?

I'm glad President Trump knows that no matter what he does these nattering nabobs will complain - so do what you want.

Not that I care one way or another but Led Zepplin and Elvis stole a lot from black music/ Call it cultural appropriation is you want. But the only way white kids were going to buy “race music” in 1957 (what it was called back then) would be through a white intermediary named Elvis.

Led Zepplin aka Jimmy Page has been sued many times for not crediting old black blues musicians. Blacks won (their heirs won) most of the lawsuits. As far as I know Elvis/ Colonel Parker was more honest and credited song writers properly.

Elvis sang black music and gave credit, that’s all that matters. Wynton Marsalis plays Bach and Vivaldi and also gives credit.

OMG!!! Anyone who knows Elvis’ biography KNOWS Elvis style was an omage to and fusion of the Black gospel church choirs, which he himself sang in, and other influences highlighted at the time he entered the music entertainment field.

His sound was soulfull, country, bluesy and rock altogther, which is why his sound caught on with so wide an audience so quickly.

My question is where was Krugman when Obama was handing out this swag like it was trick or treat candy, handing it out to any and all comers? Where were you then Krugman? Crickets.

Elvis combined country, gospel and blues all by himself. He made his own style. He no more “ stole” music from blacks than he “stole” music from
Bill Monroe. Elvis Presley was the greatest singer who ever lived. He could sing anything and never took a singing less in his life. He was the greatest entertainer of the 20th Century. To hell with liberal racists.

Good Grief!!! The Queen has honored musicians (make a lot of money) Sir Elton John, Sir Paul McCartney and dozens more.

Elvis also served the Nation in the Army - he should be honored - for all the taxes he paid - (to the looney left)!!!!!!

Elvis Presley frequently dined as a guest at Rufus Thomas’ house in the mid-1950s.

Their argument is hogwash.
