What if the Republicans Win Everything Again?
The NewYork Times ^ | October 19,2018 | By David Leonhardt

The end of Robert Mueller’s investigation. The loss of health insurance for several million people. New laws that make it harder to vote. More tax cuts for the rich. More damage to the environment. A Republican Party molded even more in the image of President Trump.

These are among the plausible consequences if the Republicans sweep the midterm elections and keep control of both the House and Senate. And don’t fool yourself. That outcome, although not the most likely one, remains possible. The last couple of weeks of polling have shown how it could happen.

Voters who lean Republican — including whites across the South — could set aside their disappointment with Trump and vote for Republican congressional candidates. Voters who lean left — including Latinos and younger adults — could turn out in low numbers, as they usually do in midterm elections. The Republicans’ continuing efforts to suppress turnout could also swing a few close elections.

No matter what, Democrats will probably win the popular vote in the House elections, for the first time since 2012. Trump, after all, remains unpopular. But the combination of gerrymandering and the concentration of Democratic voters in major cities means that a popular-vote win won’t automatically translate into a House majority.

In the Senate, the election already seems to be slipping away from the Democrats. Several of this year’s close Senate races happen to involve Democrats defending seats in red states. As a result, Republicans may expand their current 51-49 majority, making it easier for them to win close votes on legislation and nominations.

3-5 more US Senate seats plus the retirement, or death, of the most bitter Never Trumpers in the US House and Senate guarantees the next Congress, if the GOP holds, will be much more Trump friendly

The balance of power in the US Senate has been so close the Never Trumpers, several who will be gone Jan. had an undue leverage to move the agenda Left. With them gone, and 3-5 more GOP Senate seats, the Congress will be less beholden to the GOP-E modereates.

We don’t know who’s going to win the Senate and Pelosi is planning to impeach the President. Also Pence which would make her President.

And even if that doesn’t happen there is another election in 2020.

At least the author spared us the customary reference to back-alley abortions in his litany of doom. Possibly just an oversight.

Personally I'm holding out for work camps for NYT staff. You want shovel ready jobs? I'll give you shovel-ready jobs.

Somebody is going to get tired of winning...not.

We will never get tired of winning but we can tell by the leftist mob behavior they are really tired of losing.

The loss of health insurance for several million people.

You mean what happened when KenyaCare went into effect?

New laws that make it harder to vote.

Showing an ID?

That makes it no harder than buying a six-pack of beer, obtaining a library card, getting a fishing license, opening a saving account or any of the other hundreds of things we do in public life that require showing an ID.

Give me a break.

The end of Robert Mueller’s investigation. It's over. We are just waiting for the report.

The loss of health insurance for several million people. For the most part, that would be young healthy people who didn't want the insurance in the first place.

New laws that make it harder to vote. He means harder for illegals to vote and Dems to cheat.

More tax cuts for the rich. He is referring to tax cuts that HELP people get rich. A rising tide lifts all boats.

More damage to the environment. Actually, we are repairing damage Obama caused to the environment.

A Republican Party molded even more in the image of President Trump. That sounds to me like a good thing.

The best way to confront Trump is to leave him alone
He is at his strongest when he is counterpunching

If the Democrats would relearn civil discourse
Cease to support whacko leftists, racial politics,
Cease to cow-tow to elitist money and their politics

It would actually be a pretty good party
And might do some good

“...To the extent that there is real Russian interference in our elections,...”

It is so apparent that there was Russia collusion and interference ... a fake dossier funded by a Presidential candidate with layers/veils created to disguise her involvement and links to Russia ... used for the purpose of influencing the US election, spying on the other candidate, etc etc. Unfortunately, the swamp is deep, and like a black hole, light cannot easily escape it to bring true justice.

Trump, after all, remains unpopular.

With whom, it may be asked. Most of Manhattan, to be sure, regardless of that is where Donald J. Trump made his primary domicile for years. But then, Manhattan has a very haughty attitude about EVERYBODY who comes from Queens.

Shift around the letters in "assume" and it reads "U (made an) ass (of) me". The NYT has never come to terms with the shift that Donald Trump made, going from a rather even-handed support of several different political philosophies, to becoming a nationalistic populist under the Republican banner, not quite conservative, not especially libertarian, but definitely a highly patriotic and idealistic American.

Sometimes rude, sometimes crude, and even a little lewd at times, Trump remains at all times a very shrewd man, almost a force of nature, very good at identifying his enemies, then skewering them almost effortlessly. Behind that rough and bristling mantle, he is still a very quick wit and a towering intellect, something his enemies recognize only too late. He does not make the first strike, but his counter-punch is deadly.

And a surprising number of Americans cheer and applaud that set of character traits.

Like Sanders he will be a fringe radical with no power or influence. The notion that a blowhard with no influence or power is worse then the active evil with power that is Feindstein is nonsense

Just before you do that, make them give up Walter Durranty’s Pulitzer prize.

It would be the decent thing to do.

“Voters who lean Republican — including whites across the South — could set aside their disappointment with Trump and vote for Republican congressional candidates.”

Somebody’s smoking something. And it ain’t legal (at least not under federal law yet).

At this point, I don’t know many Republican-leaning voters, even among conservatives who didn’t vote for him, who are disappointed with the president.

I do know a bunch who are grateful Sh!tlery wasn’t elected, who are pleased, even a bit surprised at how conservatively he’s governed.

And a bunch who have been radicalized by antifa, the Kavanaugh lynching, the “#resistance,” the rise of socialists in the Party of Satan, the ill-treatment of Republicans in public, the attempted murders of Rep. Scalise and Sen. Paul, etc., etc.

But no one who is getting over his/her “disappointment” with the president.

Delusional.
