Trump says he will overrule Jeff Sessions on prison reform
Washington Examiner ^ | Oct. 11, 2018

President Trump said Thursday that he supports prison reform and that Attorney General Jeff Sessions' opposition doesn't represent his administration's position.

"If he doesn't [support reform], then he gets overruled by me. Because I make the decision, he doesn't," Trump said during a phone interview broadcast on "Fox and Friends."

Sessions, an opponent of criminal justice reform, argues the pending First Step Act would make the country less safe, threatening one of the top priorities of presidential adviser and Trump son-in-law Jared Kushner.

Who is right on the policy merits here — Trump or Sessions? What is the specific bill being considered?

What a thought. This situation is perhaps the most embarrassing I can remember. Come to think of it I’ve never seen anything like it. Sessions and Rosenstein should have been gone long ago. Poor leadership at this point. I have yet to meet someone who thinks this situation isn’t ridiculous outside the internet clowns and the 4D chess,Q garbage.

Say what you will about Vox, but I think this is as good a summary as any.

In short- a moderate and overall common-sense bill.

Exactly—the details make all the difference.

But Jared’s supposed idea that his father didn’t deserve prison time is pathetic.

Not as bad as Ivanka’s family leave and childcare tax initiatives, at least.

From the article

“Among other things, the First Step Act would ban the shackling of pregnant prisoners. It would expand annual good-time credit to 54 days off a sentence, from 47; reduce the age for elderly inmate compassionate release from 65 to 60; require inmates to be within 500 miles of families; and authorize $250 million over five years for work-training programs for prisoners. “

I’m assuming “prison reform” means mass release of violent felons?

I think we’re talking about non-violent criminals in jail for an inordinate amount of time.

There are a lot, and I mean a lot of people in the prison system who never get out, because they’ve committed some offense related to drugs, or not showing up for Motor Vehicle citations, or being disorderly etc.

Many are uneducated and poor. Many are young....many are women.

The other thing, is they let you out with no money and no means of support. You’re in jail ten years and you come out with no alternative but to commit another crime.

There are many things about Trump that the left fails to give him credit for.

The latest is the pre-existing conditions. He is bound and determined to make this a republican mandate. Funny how Paul Ryan hasn’t done zilch to make the republicans look good in the eyes of the independents.

Can’t wait to get his sorry butt out of there.

I’ve never, in my life, seen such a directly insubordinate person survive in his job for such a long time.

I’m for any reform that chops off appendages to get offenders out of prison early.

I’m with Sessions on this one, but if the First Step Act is the dumbest bill President Trump signs into law then we are in great shape.

Trump is right. Sessions is becoming an embarrassment.

Doesn’t someone without income qualify for welfare?

No. It means not putting people in jail for life for weed, or for unwittingly being a driver in a drug-deal bust.

I’m not for legalizing drugs, but there are way, way too many people in jail for drug related crimes that are then turned into violent hardened criminals.

Homeless facilities are filled with them. They want to get on with life, but few are willing to give them a second chance.

I do not think so. I think it means release of those for relatively minor crimes such as first offense doping, not violent ones.

I agree with sessions. Don’t reduce age of compassionate release. Extend to 70. Others changes to limiting on prison options

"require inmates to be within 500 miles of families"

I'm not sure I agree with this. There are only a few "supermax" facilities and there are certain inmates who definitely deserve to be in them. They can't all be within 500 miles of the inmate's family.
