McConnell ready for another Supreme Court vacancy
Washington Examiner ^ | 10/08/18

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., is signaling that he is ready and prepared to move another Supreme Court nominee from President Trump through Senate confirmation – including during the the 2020 presidential election season, if another seat were to become available then.

“We’ll see if there is a vacancy in 2020,” McConnell said in an appearance on CBS' "Face the Nation."

McConnell famously blocked a Senate vote on former President Barack Obama’s Supreme Court nomination Merrick Garland two years ago, on the grounds that it was a presidential election year.

When asked Sunday whether moving a Trump nominee in 2020 would break the precedent he himself set in 2016, McConnell argued that a Senate case in 1880 justified blocking a nominee in the specific situation in which the Senate is controlled by the party opposing the president.

Trump has boasted that he may have the opportunity to nominate several more justices. Court-watchers are closely tuned in, in particular, to the health of liberal justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg, who is 85 years old. The second oldest justice, Stephen Breyer, also generally sides with liberals on the court.

I suspect that Mitch knows that he will have a majority in the Senate for at least 2 more years, probably at least 53 to 47,and a bit more conservative. No more Flakes or Corkers and Mc Cains. So, he will be dealing from a very good hand.

“Obama appointed 55 to the circuit courts. We’ve made tremendous progress in two years but we’re only half way to undoing the damage.”

FYI, I know one of the Senior Circuit Court judges - Norman Stahl of the 1st Circuit. He’s a distant cousin of my wife, and he’s now 87. He was appointed by Bush 41. I doubt that he’d remember me - we had dinner about 18 years ago at his brother’s house in New Hampshire one Friday night. He seemed disappointed that I was practicing as a CPA despite having a law degree - oh, well, too bad.

But the point is that he’s 87. I certainly don’t wish him badly - not as a human being, and not as a relative. But now or in the near future would be a good time to resign and spend his remaining years with his wife and kids. I’m thinking that the Bush clan is now less unfavorably disposed toward Trump, given his very vigorous defense of Kavanaugh (who worked directly under Bush 43).

When LBJ was president, the Speaker of the House was John McCormack of Massachusetts. He was, I think, 80-something.

The fun part of the State of the Union, aside from Lyndon’s over-the-top Texas drawl, was that McCormack, sitting up behind ht resident, would repeatedly fall asleep. Humphrey would poke him periodically and he would wake up, look around the room, and go right back to sleep.

I see her in a care facility 12 years from now, squeezing a button to vote yea

just a question, congress critters have to be in their seat to vote, the President can sign anything anywhere - does the justice have to be IN the court to hear arguments and to rule?

“Humphrey would poke him periodically and he would wake up, look around the room, and go right back to sleep.”

They really should have had more respect for McCormack - having him poked was really noticeable. They should have set up an electronic buzzer that Humphrey could have pushed without moving at all. The only way you’d know that he used it would be if HHH smiled after McCormack woke up. :>)

That’s a real good idea because you know the rats have been studying the list Trump produced during the campaign. Need to be proactive and vigilant.

According to The Hill, the point of McConnell’s statement is that he, himself, is ready to take a Supreme Court position.

I like this version better:

You really have to wonder about the smile and the tie-adjusting, what with a green-haired midget in the background. :>)
