When LBJ was president, the Speaker of the House was John McCormack of Massachusetts. He was, I think, 80-something.

The fun part of the State of the Union, aside from Lyndon’s over-the-top Texas drawl, was that McCormack, sitting up behind ht resident, would repeatedly fall asleep. Humphrey would poke him periodically and he would wake up, look around the room, and go right back to sleep.

They really should have had more respect for McCormack - having him poked was really noticeable. They should have set up an electronic buzzer that Humphrey could have pushed without moving at all. The only way you’d know that he used it would be if HHH smiled after McCormack woke up. :>)
