Suburban voters will decide control of Congress
The Hill ^ | Oct 8, 2018 | Reid Wilson

House Republicans struggling to preserve their majority are facing a wave of Democratic money and enthusiasm in suburban districts across the country, as well-educated and moderate voters consider new checks on President Trump.

An analysis of the types of districts in play shows that two-thirds of the Republican-held seats that a top election handicapper sees as vulnerable are in suburban areas.

That has Republicans on defense in an area where Trump has bled support, even in the 2016 election he won.

The Cook Political Report lists 64 Republican-held seats as either pure toss-ups, or leaning slightly toward Democrats or Republicans.

Of those districts, 42 are classified as suburban by the researchers David Montgomery and Richard Florida at CityLab.

“The suburbs are the battleground,” said Courtney Alexander, a spokeswoman for the Congressional Leadership Fund, the super PAC backing House Republicans.

“A lot of our advertising is focused in these districts, and we’ve been there in a lot of these districts for a year talking about the issues.”

Voters in suburban districts tend to be both wealthier and better educated than voters in either rural districts or in urban cores.

They are less moored to one political party or the other than either rural or urban residents, making them the last bucket of undecided voters who are capable of swinging an election.

The fight for the suburbs has been a key priority among the Democrats. The GOP, not so much, especially on this forum where most comments reflect a dismissive attitude. Most conservatives seem to believe that the 2018 election will be a replay of 2016 with the same outcome across the country. Certainly, very few voters who supported Trump in 2016, will change their vote. They still support Trump. But, will they vote? Turnout is the most important variable in any election and usually the GOP has the advantage during midterm elections. The Democrats have been working hard to reverse that historical result planning to post better turnout in the suburbs than do the Republicans. The fight over the Supreme Court was aimed at the Democrat hard left core and suburban women. It may have backfired for them in the suburbs, but if we don't pay attention, this is where we will see our losses.

And most “Conservative Inc” types continue to hand wring and hope that if they just keep trash talking their own side daily maybe this time they will finally be right.

Many of the vulnerable districts voted for Hillary, so it’s a tough map. But in this election, Republican votes count more in blue states than they did in the general. So hopefully with better-than-average excitement among Rs, we can hold the line.

If true, this is nuts. Suburban voters don’t like lower taxes, lower unemployment, and better business conditions? If better educated people like the Democrat mob and socialism, then this country is doomed. That would be the definition of ignorance, not being educated.

Just remember, Suburban voters, that Obama sought to use the powers of HUD to FORCE big Section 8 housing blocks into your neighborhood.

Put Democrats back in charge, and they’ll do it again.

It’s all about feelings. Rational thought can’t play in this new world.

If they are under 35, they typically do.

I repeat myself. Scare those suburban moms about mob violence. Also scare them that their sons and husbands could be unjustly accused and vilified if a woman wants his job or promotion.

Two can play at the election fraud game.

I don’t support fraud and don’t practice it. But I see hand wringing on the left over it all the time. They think we do it.

“We” can indulge in just as much fraud as they can.

It makes me think of the Sturm und Drang period in Germany from the 1760s to the early 1780s. It was a rejection of reason in favor of emotion and subjectivity.

The article is essential a description of the Democrat strategy and the expected outcome with supporting evidence to convince their target voters to come with them.

But, if we don’t fight back for the next month, we will lose by default. The overwhelming response from members of this forum for similar threads over the past few months have been: What, we Worry? We won in 2016 and we will win again. No need to get all riled up, it will be fine.

We’ll know soon.

Trump has bled support?
I just don’t see it, as much as liberals wish it were true.

Which is probably the reason for articles like these.

Your comment reflects the attitude of the vast majority of FreeRepublic forum members. Nothing to worry about. Where I live, outside Kansas City and within KS2 House District, the Democrat strategy is being executed to the letter. It is amazing to see it in action and see how clueless people are being manipulated. They really think that hard core Democrats, included a bono fide Communist, will improve their lives over the wishy washy Republican incumbent and a green rookie with noting to offer but a great education and a solid war record. Many Republicans are getting ready to vote for the Democrats and the outcome is clearly in doubt.
