Deputy Attorney General Rod J. Rosenstein will stay in the job for now, but will meet with the president on Thursday, White House officials said Monday, after officials described a series of private discussions that pointed to his resignation or firing.
At the request of Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein, he and President Trump had an extended conversation to discuss the recent news stories, said White House spokeswoman Sarah Huckabee Sanders. Because the President is at the United Nations General Assembly and has a full schedule with leaders from around the world, they will meet on Thursday when the President returns to Washington, D.C.
The announcement capped a tense few hours after officials said Rosenstein had told White House officials over the weekend that he was willing to resign in the wake of revelations that he once suggested secretly recording President Trump.
On Monday morning, White House officials said Rosenstein had offered to resign to quell the controversy, while Justice Department officials said he had no intention of resigning but was heading to the White House with the expectation he would be fired.
After Rosenstein met with White House Chief of Staff John F. Kelly, he proceeded to a meeting of senior administration officials, indicating that at least for the moment, he was staying on the job.

And continue undermining the President?
Honestly I'm at a loss for what the President is doing. This guy should have been gone today. By the time thursday gets here the dems will have the media 24/7 saying Trump would be obstructing justice if he fires Rosenstein. I think the President is getting some advice from people who are working for the Deep State. He needs to fire Rosenstein and Sessions IMMEDIATELY!
Today in politics when you get control of the hammer you use it immediately and totally. Don't let the criminals have anytime to mount an offense. Republicans don't do this ever and it's why we appear so weak. I back the President 100% but I fear he is making a huge mistake by not firing this guy while he has the chance. What is the benefit of waiting? This guy has been engaged in outright sedition since he stepped in his office. There is no reason to keep him around and every reason in the entire world to get rid of him immediately.
This is his MO: ask to be fired, then cry obstruction, just like his recommendation to fire Comey.
Okay, smart guy, it looks like you really, really know so much that you’re forgetting what you don’t know. You don’t know what the President knows. Your “fear” is simply the fear of an arrogant observer, not an insider. “No reason?” “Every reason?” Sounds like you don’t back the President 100%.
This dickweed thinks he’s gonna walk in and dictate terms. Time for this coup to hit a brick wall.
Get a real job in the real world? That must scare the sh*t out of RR. He has worked for government so many years now, he will die if he has to work hard and long in a real job.
I should know...23 years in private sector, 12 years in a government job which paid more and less work to do than the private sector job!
Bingo. Gen. Kelly read Rosenweasel the riot act today, and sent him home to think things over. Until Thursday that is, when the big boss will be back in town.
I hope the President has the Secret Service frisk him, search for wires and take away any potential recording device.
Then I hope, in the interest of openness, Trump either records the sit down or televises it LIVE.
Trump has the little pi** pot by the nuts. Time to crack'em.
strip him to his skivvies and burn a red T on his forehead and send him to Hillariy’s
“Honestly I’m at a loss for what the President is doing. This guy should have been gone today.”
He should have been gone a year and a half ago along with Sessions.
Maybe he is trying to get a job with Yates at that Atlanta law firm.
When all the smoke clears, this is another one who needs to face the executioner. Getting fired for being in the resistance is not a proper closure for her.
Meanwhile, regarding Lil Ronnie, I hope when Trump faces him, Trump has a draft indictment in hand and says, your choice, quit or be indicted and fired. Your choice.
When he resigns, say gee I was kidding, the indictment was voted out a few minutes ago, Marshal, take him away.
Damn! And it isn’t even October yet:-)
Nothing but an idiot would back him one hundred percent. Any rational citizens should never give a hundred percent support to a politician. Our support is completely conditional upon them behaving the way we hired them to behave. Part of the reason I hired Trump was I expected “lock her up”, and I expected some “you’re fired”. That “if we only knew what they know” argument has worn very thin. Yes, we are observers. But we observe that Rosenstein has been at the apex of a coup attempt.
Time to fire him just because of everything he did leading up to the election, because of his corruption with Mueller, and because of his sedition. I don’t buy into any secret knowledge that makes all of that okay. Not to mention he was there sweeping Hillary’s crimes under the rug
As many theorized right now there is a war between some of the Deep State coup in trying to throw each other under the bus - for some the gig is up because the info is coming out eventually and theyre trying to take someone down. That NYT story about Rosenstein wanting to record Trump sounds like a purposed leak to get him fire, maybe its McCabe striking back or Mueller wanting Rod fired so that he can play up obstruction of justice and continue on his weak case
Time to look for those that leaked the story.
The media and most Americans can't focus on more than one item at a time.
With McCain gone, that’s one hornet’s nest which the coup loses. How much that’s happening now is “poison pills” which McCain left behind?
I don't agree. Again this looks weak on the part of POTUS.
