Husky goes on ‘killing spree’ that leaves nearly 30 animals dead; owner facing charges

TOOELE, Utah — The owner of a female husky faces a slew of charges after the dog allegedly killed more than two dozen animals in the backyards of at least two Utah homes in just a couple of hours, according to KSTU.

Police caught the culprit – a 4-year old husky – and now her owner is facing nearly 30 misdemeanor charges.

One of the Tooele residents who lost several animals, Trip Kiss, runs a petting zoo with his wife to teach animal husbandry to children with disabilities. Chickens, ducks, peacocks, a turkey and a tortoise, are just a few of the zoo's residents.

In the early morning hours of Memorial Day, he said his motion sensors went off. When Kiss looked at the surveillance video, it showed a husky running around his yard and driveway. He said the husky was targeting his animals.

"He was chewing our goose that was at the back end there, he dug out the rabbits in their enclosure," Kiss explained.

In the video, Kiss said the Husky can be seen carrying away two rabbits. It trots out of the camera's view and into the dark.

When Kiss realized what was happening, he said the husky had already killed several of his animals.

"Two rabbits, two ducks, five chickens, a turkey, a goose," Kiss said.

He said the goose was specially trained.

"The goose was so friendly," Kiss said. "It would follow us around at Renaissance fairs, charities."

Ulpian thought they should leave the carcass hanging to discourage others so inclined.

I have done that with coyote carcasses. Seems to discourage them.

It’s... a DOG!

My cat happily hunted down birds and wild rabbits in our yard.

Yeah the owner should pay up for the damages and make sure the dog doesn’t get out anymore but geez - can we stop with the hysterics?

I can see the feathered flocks running afoul of the husky, but a tortoise?

Be interesting to know the bloodlines of the husky. My brother had a husky-wolf mix. That dog would eat anything. We left a stick of butter on the counter, went out to check the grill, dog ate it. That was a fun night when the butter hit the dog’s digestive tract. My favourite though was when the dog ate my sister in law’s collie’s chew toy and every time it farted a squeek would come out. Cost my brother $1700 in vet bills to get rid of the squeak.

That is intriguing. Did the Husky drop some greens in front of the buttoned up tortoise so he investigated? If so the Husky is a pretty smart dog.

It’s healthy old prey instinct, pretty much all nothern breads have it. 10k years of arctic survival required it.

They are also escape artists. Great family dogs, but need excellent containment.

Its called ‘prey instinct’ and most dogs have it.. Even miniature poodles.

#5: Should have shot it right then and there.

That is the traditional penalty which dogs must pay after they've killed poultry or livestock. No "ands", "ifs", or "buts". That dog must be put down.

I’m guessing the husky watched these critters every day from it’s own yard?

When I was a kid i’d walk our German Shepard and about half way down the block was a house with a small poodle that would run from the porch to the curb yapping like the little ankle biter it was.

My dog would strain on it’s leash to get at it and that seems to push the poodle into higher troll mode.

One day our dog got loose and main-lined it to the poodle’s house and caught it in the front yard. Shook it like a rag doll for a bit and let go of it when I got there and left it with two nice abdominal puncture wounds.

From then on the dog never left it’s porch when I walked the dog.

Did anyone notice the name of the resident that runs the petting zoo?

We have cats who go out on our rural property (2+/- acres) under supervision...

Had a neighbor from California move in a few houses away.

His dogs would get loose, so I would put all three dogs into my vehicle, bring them back to his home, knock on the door (no-one home), put them back in the fence then call and leave a message.

Never got a thank you or a return call..FWIW I’ve done it MANY times for other dogs/owners in my area...Why? I don’t want ANY dog to be run over by a car and I do not want a dog on my property chasing one of my cats.

Dr. California dogs continued to get out and I brought them back three times...on the fourth occasion when I knocked on the door, someone came up to the door and looked through the peephole - I announced that I had the dogs and was returning them...no one came out and I took the dogs to the pound. $50.00 each. It’s a very nice rural Montana neighborhood with lots from 1 to 8 acres so I did not understand my door knock being unreplied to.

After that the dogs would not get into the vehicle, we called animal control and all they needed was a photo of the dogs clearly on other folks property. I have a 115 power zoom on my camera so I snapped a few photos.

Animal control issued tickets of $150 each dog ($450) to Dr. California.

A few mornings later his dogs were on the loose, I took my camera and a cup of coffee, sat on my teak bench and snapped a few more photos..THIS time Dr. California called and said they were aware the dogs were out and they were trying to get them back.

I did not send the photos in ($500 per third offense) and he put in a hidden fence system.

I like dogs, but some dog owners just don’t understand property rights.

Sorry for your loss.

No, it’s not rabid, this is perfectly normal behavior for a dog that has not been trained by its owners to behave around other animals. All too common is the dog owner who, because they do not have other animals, forget that a dog is a killing machine designed by nature to chase and kill prey, and do not go out and expose their dog to other animals to see their dog’s reaction and to discipline it early so if it ever did get out it won’t get into trouble.

I have lost so many animals - mostly parrots and poultry- to neighbors’ “sweet doggies” that I have lost count and have had to built “bombproof” expensive pens to keep dogs out as dogs are even worse than coons and coyotes. Just because a dog is very good with children does not mean it won’t rip apart someone else’s goat or rabbit pen and kill everything it can. Each and every time the dog owners denied it was their dog until I had to prove it by catching their dog. In one case I gave the dog away to someone more responsible ... in another case an owner did finally pay a little for the damages and got rid of their dog... in another case the owner fixed the hole in their fence and laid down wire to prevent their dog from digging under. In other cases the owner was not to be found so well... too bad for the dog.
