MSNBC spoke to a North Carolina resident on Wednesday who said that she was not obeying a mandatory hurricane evacuation because there is strength in numbers.
Just hours before Hurricane Florence is set to strike the Carolinas, MSNBCs Kerry Sanders spoke to a woman named Katie who lives in Carolina Beach, North Carolina with her three children.
Katie explained that she was refusing to evacuate and instead was planning to just try to stay safe during the hurricane.
I think we are going to do everything normally, she said.
Why the decision to stay and not fall back further inland? Sanders asked.
From my experience, getting back into town after the storms is very difficult, the Carolina Beach resident insisted. Knowing that our family and friends and our home are all here, we didnt want to leave them unprotected for a prolonged amount of time. We are going to try to stay put.
We have several neighbors saying put, she added. We feel there is strength in numbers. We checked in with one another. We are going band together and make it through.
It was not immediately clear from Katies remarks how strength in numbers would protect her family from a Category Four hurricane.

Theres a point when first responders should go on tv and radio and tell everyone if you choose not to heed our warnings we will not be helping you until the emergency has subsided. Stupid should hurt.
I think there are maps showing Category 2. And maybe it goes south and misses them entirely. Media is too hyped on disasters, scaring people.
On Fox and friends, the hyper weather blonde was always speaking of a Cat 5 and then her graphics clearly showed the force predicted to reduce from 4 to 3 before landing.
I expect an ignorant producer forced her to say increase to cat 5 when the predictions showed otherwise
The scary thing is that this STUPID woman has already reproduced several times. Does she think she’s gonna be able to save those kids when a huge wave rips them from her arms back into the raging sea? Unless she has a secret rocket ship that will blast them to safety, she’s CRAZY!
Exactly.
Lived in Florida for almost 30 years, been though several hurricanes including Andrew.
You always can tell the ones from out of state...
“how bad can it be, I’ve been though big storms up north”
I just say “right”
Honestly, if the media would stop sensationalizing people who stay behind, less people would stay behind.
This works out great for the media though. Family stays behind, news story, and after the storm, media gets to film the rescue or body recovery, another news story.
These people should just realize that they are just being used at this point.
“A well designed and constructed home should fair well if not right on the ocean”
I must ask, what is the highest wind speed you and/or your home have ever experienced?
15 foot storm surge with 20 feet waves and those homes will be gone with them in it. She’s an idiot. She has no idea how bad it can get. All her neighbors as well. They will be found in the rubble...................
jess be sure to tape your wind-ders
Katie needs to buy a sharpie and write her social security number on her arm - and the arm’s of her children. It’ll make it easier to identify the bodies.
So obviously you know they live in a tent on the beach.......
It was not immediately clear from Katies remarks how strength in numbers would protect her family from a Category Four hurricane.
...
Most likely Florence is now going to hit South Carolina as a regular hurricane, not a major, so this lady may be OK.
These days more people get hurt preparing for hurricanes than the hurricanes themselves.
Storm surge will demolish anything in it’s path..........................
“It was not immediately clear from Katies remarks how ‘strength in numbers’ would protect her family from a Category Four hurricane.”
Just about ruined a keyboard reading that one! Talk about a perfect “these people are idiots” commentary without saying so! The only thing better would be if the reporter had ended the sentence with an ellipsis...
Well, at least where she is is (normally) above sea level, unlike much of NOLA, so Spock might only say she’s being illogical rather than highly illogical (which is Vulcan for calling someone a “dumbass”).
Yeah, more strength in numbers as you’re all blown away to parts unknown.
‘She a strong independent woman who don’t need no man.’
