I was surprised at the strength of Irma as it passed through Atlanta. I thought the governor had overreacted when he shut the whole state of GA down. But he was right.
The greatest danger: all those old coal mining spoil tips in West Virginia could be in danger of collapse from the potentially very heavy rains. That could cause major flooding danger and pollution issues downstream.
We have rooms for 6 nights in 4 different VA cities.
I gotta take a little while to accept this reality, then get in action, see about alternative plans and find out what the airline will deal on.
I was so excited to make this trip.
This is Old Town:
Anyone speak weatherese?
The last time a storm hit Richmond was Irene in 2011. Lot of people lost power due to felled trees destroying overhead utilities. Some people did not have power restored until a week after the storm.
Sometime this morning, the Air Force will be flying it’s hurricane plane into it to take readings and then the NWS will have a better forecast and put out more info.
The ground around here is saturated also. Not flooded but saturated.
Just heard on the radio that the electric companies are preparing for power outages up to 14 days.
The grocery stores are full of people stocking up on non-perishable items.
Just heard the power companies are preparing for massive power outages. Two weeks or more in places.
Best to cancel and salvage what you can.
New Bern is a historic town, there’s a lot of old homes and buildings from the 1700s.
It depends on what part of Richmond. The James is going to flood badly, and tributary creeks will back up. It’s likely that power will be down in many places. Some roads and bridges are likely to be washout out/closed. Gas may be difficult to obtain. I would reschedule my trip, or at least wait till the storm passes to assess the situation.
Are these "government" trips?
Two, actually.
VA will be borderline, depending on where you plan to be — but if the storm stalls as currently expected, all of the South and East of the Commonwealth will be dealing with heavy and possibly unrelenting rain. Even if you manage to avoid mudslides, washed out roads/bridges, and floodwaters, the fact remains that it won’t be pleasant to be out and about.
If I were in Roanoke or west, I might chance it, but Piedmont and the Tidewater will be a mess. Trees will be down and power out in many places, and if you have plans to visit specific attractions, there’s a strong chance they will be closed anyway.
I am sorry for your bad luck.
Translation: the storm continues to be very powerful and may be strengthning. Eyewall replacement cycles are normal in major hurricanes. The can mean temporary weakening, but so long as the water is warm and wind shear is light, storms normally recover full strength after an EWRC. Florence is just in a very favorable environment right now. The only good news is that the lower NC coast is relatively — relatively — less populated. I realize this is no comfort at all to the many thousands of tarheels who do live there. As a life-long resident of New Orleans, I know just how you feel.
I was replying to someone who asked - you need to reply to him, not me...
I was sent on a trip to a phone company such that IBM was paying $50,000 per day in DAMAGES to this company, since IBM was fouling up the ability of the phone company to dispatch repair service.
I had a flight cancelled (because of a tornado warning), and I got 'chewed out' for not catching a flight in Dallas. The tornado warning did not bother me, but the airline held us in area waiting for the flight that was later cancelled.
I made one minor mistake: I did not list the SHORT HOP flight from Austin (TX) to Dallas (TX) as part of my flight to the phone company. That would have mattered...
Maybe there are MORONS running IBM...
I would say "wait to decide". By Friday morning you will know what the impact to Richmond will be. Call up and ask people at your destination what things are like then.
upper east Tennessee.
2’’ or 10”? We’ll see.
