constitution ^ | September 10, 2018 | Andrew West

In what may be one of the more bizarre stories of 2018 so far, an undisclosed security threat has shut down a solar observatory in New Mexico, and angered local authorities in the process.

The high ground? I would imagine high end drones that anyone with $$ could get would be more of a threat.

And if the FBI is making such a public deal of the high ground/observatories near White Sands, would this not trigger satellites from other countries to focus on the region?

My guess is someone had some sort of antenna, monitor, device, etc installed and was picking up some sort of intel from nearby activities.

Other telescopes which the FBI doesn’t control would see it. This has to do with something in area itself. White Sands and Holloman theory sounds more plausible than anything so far.

Unless it is a DISCLOSURE event!!! ;/

Have been there three or four times. Also nearby is the Apache Peak observatory. The Roswell crash site was 80 miles northwest of Roswell. Nearby is the County seat for Lincoln county, Billy the Kid country, it is in Carrzozo, which is about forty some miles due east of the Trinity site. Also a massive shield Volcanic area called “Valley of the Fires” is close by too. Lots going on in that area. The Corona area also received fallout from the first Atom bomb test.

I understand; but it’s so beautiful, and still useful for some educational outreach purposes. I hope they can find a way to preserve and keep it open. (It would make a great art gallery space!)

You should try flying a drone anywhere around that area, and see what happens.

As for foreign satellites, anything is possible. Without knowing what is being tested at White Sands, and how, we have no idea what methods of monitoring would be suitable.

If you want a reason why the FBI is temporarily shutting down a solar observatory (started by the DoD, ironically), I am giving you the most plausible answer, that's all.

The post office is where the spy had his equipment delivered.

Mapping software says Cloudcroft is about 77 miles from Roswell. Hmmm...

Not just the local post office, but some reports say a few residences in the area of the post office and observatory were also evacuated.

Seems a bit odd being such a remote location.

You’re right. It actually sits on the edge of the Sacramento Mountains overlooking Alamogordo.

It’s not in the desert. It sits on a mountain top.

Well Sunspot is a long way from anywhere. You have to be going there to get there. This small community looks like all there for the solar observatory.

Hey... I've been there.! Me and four others were sent there on fire fighting detail in the national forest back in 1967.. I was stationed at McGregor Range at the time... It was the nearest beer joint we could find.. :)

Do you see Oliver Lee State Park at the bottom of the mountain? My two uncles (now deceased) hated the fact they named a park for a cattle rustler and murderer.
