In what may be one of the more bizarre stories of 2018 so far, an undisclosed security threat has shut down a solar observatory in New Mexico, and angered local authorities in the process.

Very strange. . .
Must lean towards.. Info coming in about the sun that would be potentially disastrous. Solar flare?

Maybe future disruptions are on the horizon...

1. G2 solar flare coming this week:
http://spaceweather.com

2. And a nationwide DHS FEMA FCC all citizen mobile phone “Presidential Alert Emergency Test” is coming on 9/20:

The WEA test message will have a header that reads “Presidential Alert” and text that says:

“THIS IS A TEST of the National Wireless Emergency Alert System.”

Speaking of observatories, the beautiful old Yerkes, belonging to the U. of Chicago and where many well-known astronomers studied, is more or less going out of business next month:

Visited there once about ten years ago. Awesome place. You could go in and roam around at will. Nice museum, too. They still have their original observatory; a grain bin they bought from Sears, and rotated with about a half-horse electric motor driving a #10 bicycle chain!

Not much further from Soccoro, either...

Isn't that where the first Atom Bomb was tested?

I have been to the area but not the observatory. Yes the observatory is built on a mountain which overlooks White Sands missile range. But a solar observatory is not a high tech piece of equipment. It doesn’t work like a telescope, and is useless for spying. My guess is a terrorist threat mentioned it.

Well, I was thinking that it’s where a famous UFO sighting took place in 1964.

The NSO is an optical telescope site. I suspect it has nothing to do with the observatory, but everything to do with the mountaintop it is on.

Probably installing some sensors that someone else needs.

I would not get too excited about it.

I had friends who lived in/near Cloudcroft, near the site.

Beautiful place.

The NSO: https://www.nso.edu/

(it is in close to White Sands Missile Range.)

A quick look at a map indicates its about 30 miles from White Sands Missile Range and Holoman AFB. Upcoming test of new-technology most likely.

I'm not sure I get what threat a solar observatory 30 miles from White Sands would pose?

.
Go with the FBI on this.

The Sheriff is a leftie that has protected the alien child railroad that operates between Mexico and New Mexico.

He is definitely a friend of the pedophiles.

The Feds got their tit in a ringer over the Muzzie school shooter training camp, so they are in cover mode in NM.

All of these (USPS office, solar abservatory, Roswell, a-bomb test site, White Sands test range, El Paso missile rangle (AA training, etc.) are all not too far away as far as New Mexico desert distances go.

A few states on the east coast.
A couple of countries in Europe.
Three days invasion distance in May, 1940; Sept 1939, June 1941. 8<)

Perhaps not the equipment itself, but the high ground it occupies. Perhaps the staff who work there? Any Chinese post-doctoral students doing research there? Maybe DoD wants to use the spot for their own observation?

It won't be shut down for long.

A Bad Thing.

Secrecy is always to be deplored.

I hope someone leaks the truth.

Yerkes is a wonderful place and instrument, but, there are lots of amateur astronomers with better equipment in there back yard than the scope there.

And most are in darker areas.

It should be preserved, but, unfortunately, it’s not good enough for useful science any more :(

Functional observatories these days are all “Adaptive Optics,” and in very high places.
