Dems shut down Senate over Kavanaugh hearings
The Washington Times ^ | September 5, 2018 | Stephen Dinan

Senate Democrats closed down the chamber floor Wednesday to protest the confirmation hearings of Judge Brett Kavanaugh.

The hearings were able to continue, but only after the GOP agreed to quit floor business for the rest of the day.

Under Senate rules, committees need consent from both sides of the aisle to meet into the afternoon when the floor is also in session. Consent is almost always granted...

As Mark Steyn observed on the Rush show today, what is really going on is a civil war in the Dem party. The base insists that Chuckie and his fellow dinosaurs stop the nomination, but he knows he can’t, he doesn’t have the votes. But they have to make the noisiest show they can, because as we have seen already in this primary season, incumbent heads are gonna roll.

No, it’s an archaic rule that normally isn’t a problem like it says in article.

So what's the point of doing that?

The whole point of the dems requests for everything Judge Kavanaugh wrote since 2nd grade, and this latest tantrum, is to delay the approval until the new senate is seated, whereupon the dems think they will be in the majority.

If you scan the interactive dynamics of these situations, rather than simply exchange verbal comments, you will readily see where the Democrats & the complicit media are trying to take us. This is a rough draft of a piece that I am working on for my web site. (I am not decided yet whether it should be formally posted, but it deals with where these Trump haters seem to be headed: A Last Chance?)

Hearings are essentially the only way both sides can formally ask questions and get answers. Kavanaugh provided 1000’s of pages of answers to previous questions, but I found his answers today to Feinstein regarding gun control, abortion, and executive immunity to be very enlightening.

Let the Senators have their time according to the rules, then vote to send to the floor

It is about "churn" they want to crate a whirlwind of controversey. But old Willie Shakespere had them pegged centuries ago.

"A tale told by idiots, full of sound and fury, signifying nothing.”

They know they have nothing so they want to create a controversey out of nothing but them making noises and the MSM is falling right in line to help.

Based on his answers to Feinstein, I would think that abortion isn’t going away anytime soon.

If I were in charge of the hearings, I would have assembled an experienced team to brainstorm the possible ways the Democrats might disrupt the hearings so I would have counter-measures ready to quickly implement.

No need for that.

Senator Grassley just needs to tell everyone that they can submit written questions for Justice Kavanaugh and that would eliminate this show in a hurry.

McConnel suspended the senate so the committee can resume.

So what's the point of doing that?

Here is my theory on why the Democrats are throwing it all in now instead of waiting for Ginsberg's replacement.

In the current 52R-48D Senate, the Judiciary Committee is proportionally 10R-9D. If the Republicans pick up a few seats from the Democrats, (even as many as 5), the Democrats might lose 2 seats on the Judiciary Committee, making it 12R-7D, or maybe even 13R-6D.

With that kind of skew, the Democrats would be powerless to even make a show in the next Congress when RBG's replacement might come up. That's why they have to do it now, while they have the numbers. Otherwise, the Republicans will have the numbers to dominate the narrative.

Earlier, Senate Democratic leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., had objected to Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell’s request for the committee to continue meeting after 2 p.m.

But McConnell, using a parliamentary maneuver, adjourned the Senate for the day -- because commitees can meet as long as they like when the Senate is not in session.

Thought I'd share this excerpt from the fox article in Post number 9 on this thread.

Sounds like McCuckhole was waiting for someone to demand the Shutdown of the hearings all along. My bet is Repub's figured they'd have their cake and eat it too and move Senate business along until someone complained.

Just my IMHO.

R’s give progressives the power to stack the supreme court when progressives nominate anyone more qualified than a ham sandwich.

That’s how we got Sotomayer and Kagan.

OTOH, progressives fight to the death regardless of qualifications because they understand what the fight is about. They will say and do anything to win.

That’s why any successful conservative would be crazy to even want to be on the Supreme Court—given the Borking that’s coming. God bless the ones who step up and put themselves through that crap.

That’s why we like Trump. He fights.

That’s what we’re seeing here.

Kavanaugh filling this position strikes terror in their lefty hearts. As it should. They are losing at every turn and the left is pissed at their leaders for letting it happen. The leaders only move is to throw a fit and hope it looks like their actually being effective.

Like many of their moves lately it ends up being very effective...to the conservative agenda.

Pass the popcorn.
